Blindsight had plenty of neologisms, something that has always irked me a bit with scifi; I don't think I've ever read a scifi book with completely 'natural' feeling neologisms, they always feel a bit forced.

And yes, the crew being revealed to be speaking in dozens of languages was a cool concept. How you throw in Hindi and Farsi and Mandarin words to better get across what you're trying to convey because they do it better than the equivalent words in English or French or German say.

>>9662476
Not him, but I'd be very content with as many people reading it as possible. It really is a fantastic book. It has it's problems of course, as often happens when non-writers become writers and invariably go for scifi, but those are all overshadowed by how good it is in general. Echopraxia was a let down in comparison but still a nice enough read.

Personally I'm looking forward to the third (and final?) book in the series he's writing. Hopefully some of the leftover questions from both books are going to be answered.

Read the Symphony of Ages series by Elizabeth Haydon. The first book had some good ideas and some passages were really moving, then it became utter trash. I have no idea how the author convinced the editor to publish 9 books and counting, or how they average 4 stars on Goodreads.

The female protagonist is depicted as a very, very strong woman despite being frail and having no personality. Her main traits are loving everyone and being able to show big, bad men the wickedness of their ways just by being so cute. Oh and she likes music.

If you want a book series that you can read mindlessly, a book series that you can enjoy, don't bother. But if you want a series made for a real man, one that you have to fight at every page in order to continue, a constant struggle against yourself, a real test of discipline, then this is the series for you.

Robert Howard's Conan stories were published in Weird Tales in the 1930s. IIRC its circulation didn't exceed 50,000, and that was during the heyday of pulp anthologies and magazines. Do any of the modern mags and anthologies even have 50,000 readers today? There's no venue and market for professional short story writers of genre fiction anymore; it's now the pursuit of mere hobbyists, idealists and enthusiasts. Even further, the likes of HP Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith will never be seen again because the modern way of life doesn't throw up these sorts of writers.

It's true that short story writing probably isn't as profitable than as it used to b e. But I think it's a good starting point for new writers to get some starting chops and actually finish some things instead of just revising chapter one for 9 months on your first book. It's certainly better than starting out with a bloated 9 volume series or whatever the hell is hip with contemporary SF&F writers nowadays.

Finished Blindsight recently. A real good story, and it's always nice when the author actually does the fucking research and knows what he's talking about. But after all the hype here and elsewhere I guess I was expecting something more. In the end I didn't really care about the characters, because they are all so inhuman and hard to relate to. I suppose that was the idea, but still. Among comparable books, Accelerando does this better IMO.

But

To date Blindsight done it best, with aliens being some kind of unconscious machine aiming to utterly silence us. Kind of like a natural distaster, with no chance of communication.

It just makes a lot of sense to utilise the human population. We're very versatile machines and have the bonus of having a lot of skill manoeuvring and operating in a planet we've been changing the last few thousand years to fit our needs. That's to say, why should aliens design machines to operate in human cities when they could just use humans.

The question is, how? Mind control is pretty dull. I love the idea of some kind of way to make humans side with the aliens against their own kind of their own accord. Some kind of greater good maybe.

>greater good
Speaking of that, I've always enjoyed the Tau in 40k's (underutilized) approach. Just convert them. Think of all the crazy shit people have become devotees of over the years. Even if the deal struck is pretty shitty you'll still find people willing to go all in with the Aliens.
You can have all sorts of variations too. Aliens offering the better deal, aliens being worse off, humanity having gone down a path beyond saving (like BNW/1984). Really I don't see the need for anything other than alot of charisma and a good idea (probably through a human mouthpiece).

Or down the edgy route I've always thought of an Opium Wars kinda deal. Imagine Aliens offering free space drugs for like a year (medical/narcotic/maybe both). Then have a hero take a Lex Luthor like stand against their bullshit. I'd bet there'd be alot of people willing to join the Xenolegion to protect the source of euphoria/immortality drugs/tech.

Just a thought. Apologies for the blogpost.

>> No.9664006

I think a few first world countries could dig the greater good deal, but a few others maybe not (Ahem, America). Could lead to some interesting factions.

You've simplified the opium wars a bit lol but it's a good concept. Forcing earth to participate to galactic trade and using the system for travel is a fairly solid motivation.

But all these ideas get lost when you factor in sublight travel etc.

Of course! Just spitballing, after all. Though a direct 'Opium Wars in Space' story could be pretty damn cool too.
Ultimate I'd rather writers look to human behavior & history for character motivation rather than the same brainwashing/mind control/enslavement shit over and over again.

I like looking to history for influence too. I guess studying the native Americans who sided with the colonial Europeans would be interesting, as there was a very present difference in technology. To my knowledge it was mainly the promise of luxury resources and weapons tech which motivated them, but then the natives were disjointed tribes and only thought to use their new gifts against rival tribes.

Perhaps aliens could use nations especially errant from the rest of the world, like N. Korea, and gift them with wondrous weapons to use against us. Could be a fun story.

Unfortunately my computer is borked at the moment (hence the mobilefagging) so I won't be able to share till I get it fixed in a day or two. I'll post some of my less rough stuff here (or the next sffg) then.

For now I'll share the (very) basic thrust:
>aged warrior from Early Iron Age society loses everything (in large part due to his own poor choices/character faults)
>manages to even fuck up mercenary work despite being a skilled killer because he self-sabotages constantly
>about to jump off a cliff into the sea
>remembers a story he heard of a mountain with a shrine to the Dreaming God
>some stupid oracle bs that promises anyone who reaches the peak can ask the god to change their fate
>society is 50/50 on whether it's actually a way to commune with the gods or a stupid deathtrap
>nobody_ever_reaches_the_top.waxtablet
>our hero assumes its a crock of shit (seen a lot of oracles turn out to be con artists), but decides he'll at least see it for himself.
>Figures he can always just off himself after if this little quest doesn't play out.

So he climbs the mountain, which grows more and more surreal as he nears the top. Due to the sacred rites none of the pilgrims are allowed to climb after sunset lest they risk the wrath of the gods - a stupid law he nevertheless obeys on the off chance that maybe this particular sacred mountain is the real deal. He of course meets some fellow pilgrims. Then every night he reflects on some of the key moments (good & bad) that landed him where he is. The days/climb serves as frame while the nights are each a short story.

Ends with him reaching the top and confronting the Dreaming God. Won't say more here, but it turns out both the skeptics and the legends themselves are both wrong about the nature of the mountain and what lies at the top.

Drawing a lot of inspiration from Purgatorio and Anabasis as well as the Conan stories. Looking forward to feedback once I can actually post some excerpts.

There's a pretty big movement trying to revive the entire old pulp spirit, mostly inspired by guys that saw the Puppy debacle, also felt that recent Hugo winners have been dismal, but thought the Puppy picks were terrible too. It's mostly centered around the Castalia House blog, which is a problem for a lot of people because Vox Day is associated but he doesn't get involved there much (why give CHB clicks when you've got your own rabid fanbase at your own blog?).

There's noise on social media, there's a Discord, a lot of blogs, a lot of people reviewing old stuff and self-publishing new stuff they shill to each other. You're really not alone.

That's great anon. The pendulum really does swing. Will have to do some digging on all that.
As for the awards the hugos have obviously been an issue for a while now, but I feel like the puppies concept was never the right solution in the first place.

>> No.9664279

I mean not just jokes like Chuck Tingle, that slate of sentimental John C. Wright stories too. They didn't put up anything that was really beyond reproach or as good as past Hugo winners. The message was pretty muddled between "blackballed right-wingers can't get anything past the Tor folks who run the Hugos" and "the Tor folks who run the Hugos only let trash get awarded," and they didn't manage to make the case that anything better was getting published.

meanwhile the OSR grognards were getting tired of that mess and one of them set aside like all his free time for a year to read the books Gygax listed as influences in first edition D&D. He found a lot of great, really great stuff that doesn't get talked about much anymore at all, and that's been influencing this punk underground thing that's been going on as a direction to take things that isn't Jemisin-style intersectional lecturing or Baen-style right-wing fanfiction.

anyway they're Pulp Revolution or Pulp Revival or just PulpRev and they've got to a point where a lot of them have self-published novellas they're shilling to each other, Cirsova had already been working on his heroic fantasy magazine before that (he saved up a thousand dollars to pay authors before he started, just to make sure this sort of thing could happen) and now there are a ton of articles where they're crowing about how they're going to take over the world. Angelo Bevitore was by all standards living a comfortable and fulfilling life. That nearly all of it had come from smuggling liquor in and out of the dry city of New York was of very little consequence as far as he was concerned.

There was a reason people drank: it eased the nerves, warmed the body and made even the coldest and dirtiest gutter feel like a good mattress. Agriculture as a whole had been an attempt to keep the beer flowing, and in his opinion it would be shameful to have the rhyme without the reason. Someone had to keep the city soused as a kitchen sponge, and for the past seven years one of those men had been him.

It was a demanding job, and often called for long hours, crude methods and cuckoo ideas, but the pay was decent enough to bring him a life of modest comfort. He had a ritzy apartment with electric lighting and some well tailored suits, an automobile fresh off the assembly line and a beautiful wife; but as his key clicked in the lock and the front door swung open the treasure on his mind was his daughter, Eveline.

He wasn't sure where she got it – he had a hunch it had something to do with those astrology books she always spent her money on (or was it astronomy?) – but the girl had a knack for seeing things that hadn't happened yet. It was a talent that came in useful more often than not, and one he relied on more than he cared to admit. Mr. Bevitore was a practical man, and he knew to foster a talent when he saw it.

“Anybody home?” he called out, rapping his knuckles against her door. He was used to responses that weren't quite words – “uh huh”s and “mhm hm”s chief among them – but the whump and ruffle of toppled paper stacks was certainly a new one. With a sigh he opened the door, and found the room in complete disarray.

The writing slate on the far wall had been mantled with chalk scratchings from corner to corner, and even the blackspace and marginalia had been cannibalized to make more room. Mess carried over from the wall to the desk, and from then on to the bedding and floor The carpet was littered with scratch papers and charts, bare patches were stained deep with dribbles of ink. In the center of it all sat Eve by her wall, startled and suddenly quite aware of the chaos around her.

“Is there a non-crazy explanation for all of this?”

“The universe is expanding,” she mumbled sheepishly.

“I figured as much” he sighed. Eve shifted awkwardly in her spot, an obvious attempt to interpose herself between him and the section of the wall beside her. It was at that moment that he noticed the faint scent of crushed calcite.

I ended up disliking most of the classics I read after reading modern sci-fi/fantasy series. I know I read some of them as a child, when I was 16-18 or so, and I liked them, but I just can't stomach the silly progressiveness (female characters, casual sex) and clumsy quirkiness many of the books contain. I hate just about every character in any of the books, unless I find them completely bland and forgettable. The writing is just stale in general. I assume that was different back in the 60s and 70s, but it's going on 2020 now and I'm comparing them with everything written up to now, not just with the ancient stuff.

Overall many of them contain interesting ideas, but I'd vastly prefer a 30 page short exploring them, instead of the 400 page book full of drivel they usually are. That doesn't apply to BotNS, which is great, nor Starship Troopers, which is irredeemable garbage, and I haven't read Star Maker).

Dan Simmons books are kind of dazzling when you first read them, but I found that they lose a lot of appeal upon a re-read. There's a lot of stuff, but most of it just feels kind of random and kitschy and ultimately pointless.

What are some good but not very well known Sci-Fi books or series that you have read and would recommend?

I'll start:
>The Last Man on Earth Club by Paul R. Hardy
A bunch of interesting end of the world scenarios tied together with a somewhat realistic description of PTSD.

>Remembrance of Earth's Past aka The Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin
A trilogy about humanity's interaction with an alien species across several centuries and foreign polity in the universe in general, written from a Chinese point of view, since the author is a Chinese engineer.

Honorable mention:
>Star's Reach by John Michael Greer
Set in a post apocalyptic future (a soft apocalypse resulting from the law of diminishing returns in regard to technological progress, resource shortages, and environmental destruction imploding human civilization over the course of a century or so, story is set a couple hundred years after that), with a very fleshed out society and the story driven by the attempt to find out what happened to a kind of SETI program, that may or may not have made contact with aliens before everything fell apart.

>Permanence by Karl Schroeder
Interesting ideas, but poor character writing, can't give it a wholehearted recommendation.

I feel like the BBC radioplay of Neuromancer was far better than the book was. As good as Gibson's concepts are, he almost always seems to write himself into a corner to the point where it bogs down the entire story

Once the whole "winter mute" thing comes to a head on the moon is where I started losing interest

This is why I don't find "hard science fiction" particularly engaging. Yeah if something has somewhat of a basis in science, that's great, but that shit needs to take a backseat to the overall story. I like to think when I read sometimes, but I just want to get lost in it more

Really enjoyed Ubik. Kept the weird themes from Palmer Eldritch but had a more punch plot, like Do Androids Dream. Probably my favourite of the three so far.

The bait and switch with Pat/time reverse girl was done pretty well, especially as I totally dismissed Jory/hungry kid and he returned as the main villain. Runciter was a real character, heartily enjoyed his presence. I think the whole "half-life naturally regresses back in time" was introduced a little late but my only real critacism. Also the final ending seemed a little weird for the sake of weird but got me thinking.

So I'm a fa/tg/uy who for some fucking reason decided to take my setting and write a novel in it. The setting is 90% focused around a single city and the immediate area around that city. I need someone to convince me to not do this. I'll give a brief summary of what it's about.

>Divinity is passed through the 'divine infection', spread through a kind of parasitic flying creature that attached to the body of a human or animal and exchanged blood. Think a hookworm mosquito the size of your finger. Those who contract the divine infection are set upon a road to divinity, joining the ranks of the thousands of living saints in the city. Most of these individuals are urban poor, as they are more likely to contract the divine infection. Sainthood often kills the infected once the eggs of the parasitic creature hatches inside them, which makes minor divinity unattractive to those of actual wealth.

>The main character is a homeless man who has contracted the divine infection and is taken in by the church to be assigned his areas of concern.

>Other features of the city is the looking glass. A technology created by two lens placed near one another. A looking glass allows one to see along the range, a sliding scale of reality perpendicular to the one man occupies. One can be 'reflected' through a looking glass by a skill technician as a form of cosmetic surgery. This is used both for those who wish it and as punishment for criminals, warping criminals into comic interpretations of their crime. This also gave rise to a number of human offshoots species.

>The main conflict is a political drama over the use of the setting's equivalent of a nuclear weapon, the Aras Ve. Essentially a looking glass device made to break and warp space around it and how they interact with the malignant intelligences higher up on the range.

>The main character is forced into this as he is assigned areas of concern related to the looking lens.

This sounds like the plot germs of three stodgy stories, all of which are lacking in human interest, especially that stuff about perpendicular lenses which doesn't activate my almonds at all, but puts me in mind of an optician.

Good and intriguing characters that make me want to read this stuff, unless you're a great prose stylist. You're on the right track with the parasites/infections because it's all about mortality, illness, and perception - stuff we all think about. The 'divinity' stuff sounds wishy-washy and vague however, so it is difficult to know what you have in mind here. Anyway, my point is to forget about convoluted plots, and use simple and emotionally resonant situations bouncing around with interesting characters. Thumbs up for deadly parasites, thumbs down for boring lenses and cold-war esque nuclear intrigues.

Write a quick sketch of the whole story and then see if you feel like properly witting everything down. The looking glass and "cosmetic surgery" through is a neat idea and could be used to easily have some monstrosities pop here and there and give it a horror twist. But the "main conflict is a political drama over the use of the -insert doomsday device-" is really overused. Personally I would say keep it for an unexpected turn of events but don't make it the focal point, I think the "pilgrimage" the main character goes through is way more interesting; you could have him be a somewhat unreliable narrator, seeing divinity in what is only a parasite.

So the beginning of the main plot is the use of the Aras Ve. In my outline it then diverts to more deal with the aspects of the Range. The main characters are the following:

>Solomon, the homeless man who becomes the Saint of Poverty, Lost Causes, and Looking Lens Disasters. A former university professor driven into paranoid schizophrenia after a looking glass disaster during which he was attempting to see further up the range. Uses red scotch, a narcotic, to keep the voices quiet which is what lead him down the spiral of disgrace and poverty.

>Adonai, a current research attached to the university who knew Solomon during his tenure there. Wrestling with the fact that he could have prevented the disaster which drove Solomon mad while enjoying the fruits of being elevated to Solomon's previous position.

>It That Speaks In Many Tones, the identity of one of the voices inside Solomon's head. It is infant one of the malignant intelligences higher upon the range.

>Tabitha, a diva and looking lens procedure addict. Is involved mainly through the fact her boyfriend is the main supplier of red scotch in the city, which is heavily used by the numerous schizophrenics there (schizophrenia is overly common in the city).

>Haluk, the attendant of A Voice In Two and Three, and leader of a secret fraternity at the university devoted to a Range intelligence.

>Gerd, saint of Unrequited Love, Sexual Release, and Bitter Fruit, owner of the largest pleasure house in the city and assigned caretaker of Solomon during his first days.

Ladies and Gentlemen, children of all ages, and you there with the walrus flippers you're included too; the story you are about to read is one of betrayal and murder, mystery and magic, clever heroines and dashing villains; you know, the kind of stuff that gets you palpitating. Critics have described it as “tragic,” “terrific,” “sensational” and in one case “mouth watering.” Due to the nature of the content involved I recommend that those of you with frail constitutions put down this book and walk away now Or don't, It's a free country and I trust you can make that choice for yourself.

Is all the riffraff gone yet? Right, good.

Now then, our story begins many years ago – exactly how many is still up for debate here but it's either less than 35 or over 100, anything in between is just unimpressive – in the smoky, snarly city by the sea that we the people know as New York; a paradoxically proud and humble melting pot where men come seeking dreams and women come seeking husbands. This grand metropolis can offer anything a body could want for, but in the case of one wretched woman who nonetheless managed to pass on some devilishly good genes, what she wanted was a good place to abandon a baby. It was quite fortunate that fateful and stormy night that hapless single mother stumbled upon the circus.

In the coming years, that young boy, who by then was living as a circus freak – apparently freakishly good looks do count as a qualification – would come to lament that he had never grown up in an ordinary life, but as that boy was ordered to sweep the cars of the locomotive he had no idea what kind of extraordinary things were taking notice of him from nearby.

“Um, excuse me,” whispered a voice on the wind. The boy looked up from his work. He was alone in the workshop, among papers and dirty coffee mugs. Copper coils and fine gears littered the tables and shelves, and save a radio and a sturdy glass bulb on the table there was nothing of note. The boy turned back to his work, sweeping dust from the floorboards. Whatever he thought he had heard had lost his attention.

“Hello?” said the voice again. The out of the corner of his eye the boy saw something flash, and with a start turned around to face the empty room. “You there, boy, yes you, over here!” White sparks jumped across the filament of the Edison bulb and the boy turned to face it.

It was thick-glassed and screwed in to a fat wooden base. Brass knobs in the fixture ran to the radio and back, and the bulb itself had been graven with queer symbols and stars. “Now then,” the lightbulb flashed on again, and the boy quickly shielded his eyes from the light, “Can you hear what I'm saying or are you just noticing the flashing.” The boy nodded sheepishly peeking out from between his fingers.

“Jolly good. Not much of a talker I suppose. Good lord you're an interesting looking one. Do your eyes always look like that or is that my fault?”

“Hmm,” the boy grimaced, “you sounded better when your were turned off.” He reached for one of the copper coils at the base and then with a jolt drew back.

“Touchy,” the lightbulb remarked, “you might want to avoid grabbing bare wires in your future. It's not good for your health.”

“What would you know?” The boy grumbled.

“Quite a lot really, more than you realize in any case. What I don't know however is your name. You do have a name right?”

“It's Nicolai,” he snorted turning back to his sweeping, “And I'm just about done here arguing with a lighting fixture. Now can it and let me work.” For several minutes the boy swept in silence, calming his nerves and making sure the straw got into every nook and cranny. He had almost forgotten his argument when the bulb flashed again.

“I'm sorry, Nick was it?” The boy ignored him, and continued to sweep. “I apologize for being indelicate with such a sensitive subject earlier. I imagine I would have had the same response if you remarked upon my own physiological quirks.”

“Like bein' a lightbulb?”

“Yes,” the lightbulb crackled, “like being trapped in a lightbulb. I must tell you, it's a terribly boring business sitting on this table all day. I'm afraid I don't get much of a chance to see the world out there.”

“I s'pose that makes two of us.”

“Come now,” The bulb sparked. “You have two legs to walk on don't you? You have your freedom! The world is your oyster!”

“Just 'cause I can get somewhere doesn't mean I'm s'posed to be there. People out there have no respect for freaks like me.”

“If respect is what you wish for I can certainly help you with that. Believe me Nicolai I think we may be both able to help each other. All you need to do is free me.”

“And what makes you think should I trust you?” the boy said, resting his broom against a wall. “I don't even know what you are.”

“I'm an interested party who just wants his freedom,” The spark said, splitting apart into two concave arcs. Peering between his fingers, Nicolai saw branches and tendrils which blazed with ionized gas.”But I suppose that's not quite satisfactory now is it. You humans always feel much better being able to put a name on something. Very well then, how about you call me...” For a moment Nick thought he saw arcs of electricity coalesce into a shining amber eye.

Are you a Lafferty fan by any chance? Your opening kind of seems a little bit like the kind of casual introduction he'd use, only not as sharp (nothing to be too ashamed of though, Lafferty was a Pynchon-tier literary genius).

Does Wildbows stuff count as on topic? I just felt like I needed to vent a little.
He has a really annoying writing style. I've read Worm and noticed it but it didn't bother me as much as other people, but they still pointed it out. Now I'm reading Pact and his style is really grating.
His style is so predicatble it's boring and annoying. It follows a simple rule: Nothing can get better. If something gets better, it gets even worse than it would if that slight amount of "getting better" never happened. Any respite is a mere plot device to make things even worse.
It's very difficult to be invested in characters and plot when you know that for whatever happens things ARE going to get worse. Not "CAN get worse" which would be somewhat interesting, but "WILL get worse." Where other stories have ups and downs, Wildbows stories start from the peak, which isn't even that good for the characters involved, and only falls down with small bumps upwards which are followed by even steeper declines. I've also noticed a trend where his characters are invariably far better off if they had never gotten involved with the plot in the first place. It's even worse because characters seem to stick their dick in the plot even when it doesn't make sense for them to like in Pact
>Oh a bunch of murderous wizards and monsters exist and the best protection against them is ignorance and distance? BETTER INTRODUCE EVERYONE I CARE ABOUT TO THIS WORLD AND KEEP THEM CLOSE

I've read a lot of power fantasy and thought it was bad. Suffering porn is even worse it seems.

Not particularly. I just tried to think of what kind of prologue would best acclimate the readers to the setting and the characters, and thought that having the professional showman narrate seemed the right choice. He has the most vivid narrative voice anyway

Just finished Thousandfold Thought. Ending was kind of disappointing, but as a fag myself, Cnauir was the best gay character I've ever read, because he's not just some cocksucker, he's a fucking psycho cocksucker ruined by insecurities.

Too bad about Conphas, though.

Gets fucking awful. Character subplots are unceremoniously dropped and never mentioned again so Max can have her stupid love triangle bullshit with her boy toys, the main plot becomes a fucking mess strung together by vague conversations. Characters go from being good, to evil, to antiheroes to good again. The whole thing is just awful.
