I had a dream last night where I went out really late at night, and there was a fat black woman painting something on a canvas and easel up my street. It was a description of some daily routine she has to go through, and how it has all this oppression coded into it because she's black.

As to the lack of black authors, I think it's more so because black authors get automatically pigeonholed into writing about black experience/slavery/etc. rather than the crap that actually interests them (scifi, fantasy, etc.). For whatever reason, it's easy to market "black writer describes black misery" versus "black writer describes literally anything else".

As to the lack of black readers, I suppose OP is right. Nowadays (and perhaps always), reading was done to gain social capital. It's easiest to gain and lord over things that make you seem like you're worth more: hence, the educated black types who do read are most likely to read books about the struggle and success of blacks.

Nonetheless, I think I've known more young black women who read for pleasure than any other kind of young people. Of course, they read trashy romantic stuff (borderline erotic lit), but they do read.

The culture of anti-intellectualism manifests itself in pretty distinct ways though between say urban black people and Appalachian whites.

A poor white there that tried to read wouldn't be called out as "acting white" and from what I can see, wouldn't face the same degree of pressure to not read.
There is a lot of pop-conservative literature ('how the liberal killed god and wants to steal yer job') for example that does appeal to poor whites in that area.

In the urban communities, a more assertive effort has to be made to frame one's reading in a positive light to repel these sort of pressures. Fortunately, there are some recent pro-black self-empowerment memes that are coming back to the forefront after so many years that may help young black readers in their efforts to do this.

Furthermore, in my opinion, given these differences a black reader will have a narrower selection of books that are as easy to reframe in an acceptable light to their book hating peers. That in of itself though isn't surprising.

Like it's been said, is more about socio-economical than race, which if you think about it, it's probably also where racism starts, but that's another thing.
But there are still black authors tha are very much worth your time. Marlon James, Ralph Ellison, Chinua Achebe, Joaquim Machado do Assis and Lima Barreto (these two from Brazil). I think there are some worthwile authors from the Harlem Renaissance, but i don't know much about it.
It might be difficult to find great black writers nowadays, since it seems that they'd more likely pander to the "black struggle" than achieve some significant literary merit. Some day we will get over that, but you wouldn't really ask for black authors, since you would'nt care if they were black
