What did people think of Vineland? Is it a slow burner or just slow? I'm reading another flashback from Takeshi and I'm losing interest. He's not my favourite author but every Pynchon novel I've read so far has been enjoyable. Would be a shame for this one to be a dud.

I think I know exactly what you're talking about, where the story starts drifting off into randomland around page ~100-120, right? It gets better after that. I fought through it and am glad I did because there's a lot of good writing afterward. But to be honest, I still haven't finished ... 20 pages from the end and I've been there for over a month. I'll pick it up and finish it soon, just started reading other stuff.

Anyway, I think Vineland is an interesting one for Pynchon. His most sentimental and human, but it does drift in random directions. There are a lot of flashbacks, and intra-flashback flashbacks, so it almost feels like it's going backwards. Postmodern technique I guess. But it's probably the best in terms of accessibility and good writing. Just some thoughts. If my opinion means anything, plow through it.
