How do I know if a book is good or bad?

>> No.9535624

If it's written in English it good, if not it's bad.

It really depends on you. Do you prefer entertainment, illustrious writing, meaning, something else? People read for different reasons, and only you can decide what a good book is.

use a black light to determine if there's semen on the pages

But sometimes I think a book is good but then /lit/ says it's bad and I'm a retard.

Check the experation date on the back and if you're still iffy about it just open it and smell the inside to see if it's good or bad

That's because you're stupid enough to listen to /lit/ but not yourself.

This is the most reddit post I've seen this week. No, you don't decide whether or not a book is good. If you're too retarded to appreciate the qualities that make a book good or bad, then you are simply retarded. There are plenty of great books I don't like but appreciate their quality. You can, however, decide whether or not you like a book; and liking and determining if a book is good are completely different.

read it and if you like it then it's good

It needs to be opaque, vague, with no definite statements. It needs to abuse symbolism. Characters' thoughts are rambling and senseless. There needs to be plenty of room for interpretation by any reader smug enough to think he "gets it".
Note that any similarity of the above with young adult literature is incidental
