Where does one start with Gaddis? Is it best to go chronologically?

should I read Faust before recogs? if so, what are some good plays to get me into that style? is it time for shakespear? please hold my hand and feed me via spoon

You would do well by reading Goethe's Faust. The Recognitions was originally intended as a parody of Faust. Moreover, Faust is such a well written play that you would be doing yourself a disservice by not reading it!

I tried to start this shit today and opened up the Recognitions reading guide on the Gaddis site and on the first like 3 pages there were so many references. How important are these?

In my opinion not very. I absolutely loved the book and there's probably references that I missed.

It gets harder maybe halfway in. If you feel like you missed anything important after finishing a chapter I'd recommend the annotated recognitions site.

Anyone looking at this thread wondering if they should read it the answer is yes. No reason to put it off. It's an absolute joy from start to finish and does not feel as long as it is.
