Recommend some chocolate-colored authors to read besides Morrison and Soyinka. No Achebe and other "muh oppression" bullshit, please.

B-b-but Malcolm X's autobiography is actually pretty good.

Not read many black authors myself to be honest, but I have also read Miles Davis' Autobiography and Charles Mingus' Beneath The Underdog. Both are pretty outstanding but I preferred Miles' book: his experience with drugs, racism, recording albums, performance, leading a band, his family, childhood, spirituality and 5 years of being a hermit are very exciting to read about from him.

Mingus' book is like if James Joyce wrote nothing else but fucking hoes in Atlanta, he has some very stream of consciousness prose written in the book to the point where you have to question if he's a reliable narrator or not. Plenty of times in the book he writes it in the third person, from the perspective of the bad influence that would lead him down to crime, drugs, pimping, etc. It's pretty fascinating, albeit it is downright degeneracy. I felt pretty dirty reading his book on the train to uni every morning.

Not sure if they would be to your liking t b h, OP, but I would recommend them to anyone who likes the sound of them, even if you have no interest in jazz.

Agree on the Miles Davis recommendation.

I'd also add Iceberg Slim and Samuel R. Delaney.
