How good is this actually? I've been thinking of reading it

>> No.9402967

Just read. It reads cheesy now, but that's because so much made cliche originated in that book.

Plot is pulp but it gets beautiful at the end.

Essential Nick Land-core

Pretty boring, maybe it was good for its time.

Cyberpunk just doesn't work as well in books as it does in comics/movies.

He's one of my favorites. There is not much else that I would call cyberpunk beside his books. This series is one of his older ones, and he has written several trilogies since (Neuromancer is book one of the Sprawl trilogy). Got all the good stuff, virtual reality, augmented humans, all mentioned casually. Gotta have some affection for that kind of stuff, I would say.

It isn't good in my opinion, but it's short so you can try it out for yourself.

Cyberpunk is a visual medium. Go watch cyberpunk anime.

V good, I enjoyed it a lot. I'm going to reread it soon.

It's awesome. Gibson's style can be difficult at first, but once you are accustomed to it, you'll really start to like his prose. It's not necessary, but you can read Johnny Mnemonic and Burning Chrome before you start Neuromancer to introduce yourself to some characters and get a better understanding of the world. Mona Lisa Overdrive is a great book, as well.

I liked the ending though. So it's worthwhile.

that was a poke in the eye to all the white, blond, blue-eyed aryan supermen who believed that space would be conquered by other white, blond, blue-eyed aryan supermen. here's a bunch of dope-smoking negroes.. IN SPACE! and they're the GOOD GUYS! up yours, Robert Heinlein!

It's fucking terrible OP. Don't listen to these faggots, they probably haven't experienced a decent sentence in decades. Gibson's prose is shite, and his ideas are are also pretty shite (unless it's babby's first sci-fi). If you want something actually interesting check out some of Greg Egan's short stories (Axiomatic, Dark Integers).

I reread it recently and still found it really enjoyable. Read one chapter and you'll know if his style suits you or not.

Count Zero is also good, better in some ways. Mona Lisa Overdrive was a little disappointing.

You guys are idiots. Apples and oranges.

But Altered Carbon is much better.

>Go watch cyberpunk anime.

Go hang yourself.

OP, Neuromancer is a comfy book if you like the retro-futuristic aesthetic. Plot and prose won't blow you away but the setting and vibe make for a pretty good read.

Good taste, anon, did you know a netflix series is on the way?

>> No.9406415

I don't like Gibson's writing style, too plain, but not in a way that feels purposeful, though I've heard people say that it is. Like, it's not Hemingway plain.

>> No.9406438

>>9406415
Are you sure we're talking about the same Gibson? 'Plain' is the last way I'd describe his prose. It's hyperkinetic, technofetishistic noir.

You fucking serious? I am excited and panicked about that. Man, I hope it's good...

DESU Afrofuturism has always been in even worse shape than cyberpunk as a literary genre so I don't mind a shoutout.
