What does it take to become a writer? Incessant reading and writing, obviously. But what else?

I've been with my wife for 10 years now. We met in high school, and I got her pregnant.
She is and always has been a lazy person and a shit cook. I wouldn't even mind eating shit food if she at least made it on time. But she rarely did.

We'd get into screaming arguments constantly about how lazy and worthless she was. I felt like an asshole for it, but goddamn she was a real piece of work. The only reason I dealt with all this was for the kids, and also because the sex is great.

But one night, I got fed up. Not only did she get drunk, neglect the kids, and made me top Ramen for dinner, but she decided to give me attitude too. She was being real fucking bitchy. So I told my grandparents to keep an eye on the kids and told my wife we were going to go out and have dinner together. I drove maybe 3 blocks to a quiet area (we live in Oregon, it's not hard to find a quiet field) and I got out of the car, went around like I was going to open her door for her and let her out, and I just beat the shit out of her while she was still seatbelted. After a few punches, I asked her if she wanted to go back to her parents. She started screaming and yelling and said yes, so I beat the shit out of her again. Then I asked her what she wanted to do. She finally got smart and said she wanted to go home. So I took her home and dared her to start trouble. I even handed her my cellphone and dialed her mom's number on the drive home. I made her talk to her mom, while daring her to fucking say something.

Before that incident, I had never laid a hand on her. But I had always threatened it. I told her "one of these days, if you don't straighten up, I'm going to lay hands on you."

All my meals have been on time, and she just recently tried to make a meatloaf. It was mediocre, but I was just thrilled that she tried.

I think you have to be a little sad, a bit manic, and a good listener. If you had a depressing childhood, then you're all set. Really though it's that pizzazz, that swagger that comes from a confident person who believes that what they write is worth writing.

Never write for anyone but yourself. Try your damnedest to write as little as possible (and live life as much as possible). Think. And be a thief.

You need something to spark you so bad that you just start writing and can't stop. Case in point, I'm not a writer, or wasn't. And then one day as I was shopping my eye caught the box art of Trader Joe's coffee. All of a sudden I can't stop thinking about these two guys and I've created not only fully flushed out back stories to them, but have about 10K words of an adventure gay erotica written out about their coffee empire in 18th century England and rival tea industry. I wonder if I should send it to the CEO if TJ and see if he likes it when I'm done.

I do not think I can give life to a man, or a woman on a piece of paper.
It requires vulnerability, pathos, a willingness to create, and kill.
It requires a soul whelmed to the brim to be able to let an opinion flow into a column. I can't write. I can't do it.
Acting makes one lose himself in the role. Writing brings one out of the crevices of his own subconscious, onto paper. From the unreal, to the tangible. With every word, you leave a part of you behind.
So, before you write, always ask yourself - Am I ready for the world to see me naked?

If not, be like me, a coward. For most are.

Other than that? Depends on what your purpose in writing is.

If you want to publish books, just get on Amazon and use that to self publish.

If you want to actually make money, figure out what you're good at writing and how to market to your audience. Self publishing is still possible but less likely IMO, given that you'll be sending out short stories to magazines and whole manuscripts to publishing houses.

If you don't want to go that route, then serialized webfiction is a thing. If you take a look at Wildbow/John McCrae's work with Worm, Pact, and Twig, you'll see that he has a very consistent style and a really dedicated fanbase, to the point where he's making a decent enough income on Patreon.

Ultimately it just comes down to how much effort you're willing to put into things that are just kinda tangentially related to writing as opposed to just writing more.

You need something you want to write about. And you need to meet and understand a lot of people so you can make interesting characters out of them. Prose is obviously important, requires a lot of reading and writing. Talent helps.
