I liked The Great Gatsby and some of his essays...

One of the most critically acclaimed failures in the history of the English language. Such boring prose and rigid dialogue. I tried This Side of Paradise last year, and I just made a third attempt at Tender is the Night. I can feel myself becoming a lesser writer as I'm reading Fitzgerald's garbage.

I-I really liked the book...

I like Fitzgerald, his words are beautiful, but I still find some of his writings boring.

I love Gatsby and tried plenty of his other work, and I honestly can't stand them. I've come to realisation, that Gatsby was a fluke. Total and absolute fluke. He can write well, but his plotlines and characters are hollow and without any life in them. With Gatsby he somehow stumbled, stole, or somehow else appropriated a source for a work that is deep and feels complex, even if he never intended it to be.

I really liked The Beautiful and the Damned.

The Beautiful and Damned (only one "the") and Tender is the Night are better

I don't think /lit/ is for you.

I love This Side of Paradise and I wasn't into Gatsby at all

>> No.9292323

All Fitzgerald's novels and stories are thoughtful and fun, and Tender is the Night is his obvious masterpiece. Re-read This Side this past Summer and thoroughly enjoyed it. What a wonderful conclusion..

this, as good a coming of age moment as the end of portrait

Fitzgerald is a very good author, but This Side of Paradise is definitely a debut novel. It's not great. It's too much like the terrible, unremembered peers of his day. He would make it eventually, but he hadn't quite developed his style yet.

There are flashes of brilliance in This Side of Paradise, but it never quite ignites. If you're looking for Fitzgerald outside of Gatsby, I would definitely read The Beautiful and Damned is one of my favorite books of all time, and Tender is the Night is a literary masterpiece.

But again, I am a big fan of Fitzgerald's style, so I might be a \bit biased. I know a lot of people on here would not agree.

You would be a pleb if you thought Fitzgerald was a good writer

And thoroughly American (unlike Joyce) so that it still speaks to kids growing up in this Republic almost 100 years later. Literature, every once in a while, provides a kind of hope.
