I'm going to read Gravity's Rainbow or Moby-Dick this summer, but I'm not sure I have time for both because I want to read some smaller books too blah blah

Which should I read?

Read Moby Dick because Gravity's Rainbow is 1) bad 2) boring 3) a waste of time.

Well, I like Pynchon...most of the time. I think anyone would be lying if they didn't find him exasperating from time to time, but I really just love the paranoia and conspiracies.

I hope you've read Moby-Dick, though.

Nigga what.

You'll love Gravity's Rainbow. Read that.

Read the history of Rome.

Moby-Dick is a really boring book. Fuck, I hated that shit.

If you're familiar enough with post-modern literature to enjoy it, or even if not but you're willing to be patient enough to trudge through the whole thing, Gravity's Rainbow is your choice. It's not even boring, just thick (and not in a physical way).

GR btw.

Gravity's Rainbow, and a few other big-deal modern and/or contemporary classics (Proust definitely falls in this category) are honestly books I'd only read in a class setting in college. If I saw that a class was being taught on them I would definitely sign up, on the other hand. I honestly do feel these are books you can educate someone about the intricacies of literary theory. I just don't want to muddle through them, half-ass the lessons myself, and on top of it all not be very entertained. Which was my experience with attempting to read Gravity's Rainbow on my own.

>godawful surge from up the line, noise growing like a tidal wave, a jam-packed wavefront of shit, vomit, toilet paper and dingleberries in mind-boggling mosaic
This is at page 65.
The book has over 700.

Don't forget to systematically use PynchonWiki when reading GR.

For a sample of its awesomeness, check out http://www.ottosell.de/pynchon/jokespuns.htm

I guess I can understand the hate, I read the first chapter and it was awesome.

How can you not be entertained by Gravity's Rainbow? Even with just taking the novel at face value, there's enough sophomoric humor in there to get a giggle out of me every ten pages or so.

I'm not in middle school anymore. Dick jokes and poop humor really don't have the appeal they used to.

You obviously didn't "get" the humour, then.

The hate for Moby-Dick? It's actually really good while he's still on land. Once they set out to sea, it's just, "WE SAILED A LITTLE MORE." "WHALES ARE COOL BECAUSE THIS..." "WE KEPT SAILING" "MAN, WHALES SURE ARE NEAT."

I preferred the chapters about whales/whaling to any of the actual story involving Ahab or Ishmael. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

I wish there was more of Ishmael and Queequeg hanging out in bed together.
