Can someone rec me a book about the history of music?

I want something that goes from the beginning to as later in time as it can be.

Emphasizing what 'aspect' of music? Culture, theory etc.? Popular or classical?
Western musical tradition or global/comparative? You gotta narrow it down a bit more.

You can't expect to find a single volume that will encapsulate all of the history of western music in its theoretical density, cultural context and significance and its vast and different trajectories in different musical traditions throughout the world. It is too broad a field.
