it's about 8-10 applicants to a place. They get about 3000 applications and our years intake was about 400 but it varies year on year. As for difficulty it's mostly about the UKCAT and the personal statement. Once you get to interview it's more a case of not fucking up than impressing people.

I'm published every 2-3 months in local academic papers whenever they need an expert on western civilization. It's very boring but I'm just happy to get my stuff out there. Once you become a college professor, all sorts of crazy ass people want to put your name on stuff to support some argument.
