I need to preface my statement with the acknowledgement that the only living authors I have read are American aside from Krasznahorkai. With that said Don DeLillo has the most impressive oeurve and McCarthy has the best book. Gass probably is the most talented writer however. I wouldn't be surprised if a small area of academia and dedicated following put him up there with Proust, Kafka, Joyce, Faulkner etc...

Gerald Murnane (maybe not THE, but he's my pick to add some variety to the suggestions)

He's basically Australia's answer to Borges, Calvino, and Sebald combined, yet he doesn't imitate either of them. His writing is its own animal.

How do you type this, reread what you typed, and post it without killing yourself? I know, being Australian, English is not your first language - but that is an embarrassing way to think.
