Hey guys, trying to find a book my dad read when he was deployed. He read it in '91, thinks it came out within 10 years of then but he's not sure. It's Science Fiction, deals with a society, run by a supercomputer, in which population is a problem and they kill parents who have children without permission on a broadcasted show (slow-twitch electrocution or something). The story follows one of the kids who ends up pulling a switch (two handles, specifically) to start a war because no one else wants to. Another clue, at one point the computer orders the execution of a politician and someone wants to know why, the answer is printed out and fills hundreds of filing cabinets and is known as the "Monument to Why?" Any help is appreciated, in return, Jessica Alba

I'm sorry, OP, I don't know, but it does sort of sound like a Ian Banks novel. Read through the descriptions of some of his works, and see if any of those click.

Also, click though here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dystopian_literature#1980s).). That might help you. It's a partial list of the dystopian literature to come out around the time you place your dad's book.

Pic unrelated, except that it's my way of telling OP sorry for all the crap in this thread.

I think I actually read this book! The kid's parents have one or more illegal children, and they're kept hidden inside the house, and hmm one day the protagonist is seen by one of the neighbours and the authorities are alerted? I can't recall the name of the book though.

>> No.930575

Barry Longyear, Sea of Glass (1986):
Thomas Windom is a child born into a future where the actions and lives of all human beings are predicted and controlled by a supercomputer named MAC III. His early childhood is spent locked away in his parents' home as an illegal child. When he takes his first look outside on his seventh birthday, he is discovered by an elderly neighbor and removed by 'men in black' and placed in an Outcaster orphanage for illegal children. His parents tortured to death, Thomas grows up in the orphanage and learns to survive despite being a nonentity. Death and love come to him early, and often. He spends his teenage years learning about 'projections' and everyone's place in the world in relation to the inevitable Wardate that looms over the entire planet. As an adult, he learns of and accepts his place in the world and his role in the War.
