Funny this thread popped up today, given that I recently decided to abandon all my high brow writing projects in favor of writing self-indulgent smut for my own personal amusement. I'm wondering if writing for one's own personal pleasure and entertainment is inherently more or less artistic than writing with a particular purpose and/or audience in mind.

Erotic literature, of course, is mostly garbage catered particularly to middle aged women's bizarre pirate fantasies because it exists not to be good, but to sell. Thanks, capitalism.
