painted bird wasn't that bad. maybe i'm desensitized, the worst thing in that book was a scene where a woman is raped by a group of women who then shove a bottle of dirt in her vagina and kick her til it breaks open.

the second worst thing was a family of incestuous goat fuckers.

I read Johnny got his Gun, I didn't think it was particularly shocking, but I only read it because I saw it high up on a list of "disturbing novels".

I guess the ending was kinda sad, but the concept is more interesting than disturbing. Maybe you need to be a soldier to truly understand it.
