I had an English teacher who encouraged us to not rhyme our poems because rhymed poems are too "songy"

Although I think she did us a favor because high schoolers don't usually have the talent to rhyme in ways that aren't completely cringy and obvious

Generally it is cheesy in the present day. Rhyme and meter poetry works in song lyrics. It was more popular when people didn't have iPods and couldn't just listen to music whenever they wanted. Reading rhyme/meter poetry kind of filled that music void.
