I've been thinking of joining the Folio Society, /lit/, and I was wondering if there were any members here. Or if anybody has any of their editions.

It's basically a publishing company that publishes very well made and expensive editions of books, both fiction and non-fiction. The membership is free, all you have to do is buy 4 books within the year. It seems like a real good thing to me, especially including they're frequent sales. The cheapest books still are about $40 though.

Eh, sorry.

I have to admit the books look good.
But I'm too much of a poorfag to spend 40+ on one book.

Fuck that shit.

I'm eyeing one of those.

Think it's possible to just buy one and then not pursue membership?

I'm willing to pay that much for leather/cloth/whatever bound books with very nice illustrations and slip covers and everything. Not very often, but I think I could do it 4 or so times a year, for the especially nice looking ones.

Hahah, was it the Harry Potter? It'd be nice if they had actual folio editions, but I'm looking more into the Fairy Tales collection.

Nah, Da Vinci's notebooks looked sexy.

But oh well, read the fine print.

No fucking way I'm buying that much

What was the fine print? That you had to but four books in a year?

>> No.895616

I'm pretty sure you can just get the introductory offer and then just not get 4 books too. Kind of a dick move, but I'm pretty sure you can.

Now I see it and all I can say is wow. Buying four books in four weeks when they're all a trillion dollars? No thanks.

>> No.895630

Well, my plan was to set aside $300 or so for them. I'm mostly interested in the ones around $50 anyway.

>> No.895632

I'd only join if they had 1st editions instead of their own. Why brand your reading?
There's a series of classics out right now that's very well bound and still as cheap as regular hardbacks. Pretty sure it's published by Penguin Classics, but I'm not positive.

Seriously, you can find more constructive ways to waste your money in order to impress friends. Try smoking a $50 bill four times a year and you'll have twice as much cred

Aren't they all orange?
Not nearly as good looking.
Also australia.

Yeah, not trying to impress friends. Just thinking of having something better than paperbacks on my shelf, seeing as these will last much much longer.

How do they sell the Aenid but not the Iliad and the Odyssey?

Oh.
Yeah, those are OK.

>> No.895674

those are cool covers, but I don't see the point. if you really value the cover of a book that much, then go ahead. also if you are rich, but it doesn't sound like you are.

Bought some of these for my GF... they're really nice, the canvas covers are really classy. Makes you feel like what you're holding is proper literature. They're going to sell a bunch more titles starting this fall.

It's not just the cover - the books are printed on very good, lasting paper and have nice illustrations inside.

These books look like they would make awesome gifts, but I wouldn't put the om my shelf. If you receive one as a gift it stands aut as that special book that anon give you but if you buy them for yourself it's just showing off.
