I like reading difficult or esoteric stuff because its different and experimental anyways, but the books i enjoy the most aren't usually overly complicated. Just sincere or transgressive.

Biographies are fucking great though seriously. Its awesome to inform your readings, to learn about an author or composers creative habits, and it gives you so much to talk about. You can learn everything that made Nabokov who he is, what his books mean authoritatively, and all that stuff.

+ composer biographies teach theory to a degree.

Unfortunately I haven't spent a lot of time on Shosti yet. I was hoping to get his autobiography some time but its apparently very rare. + there's controversy over its authorship.

I try to avoid the more glossy / succinct biographies incase they leave out something, but Shostakovitch is so prolofic and interesting a good bio is going to be 1000+ pages long probably.

So far I've read mostly on Mahler, Ravel, Debussy, Prokofiev, and Beethoven. Bit on Bach too, but I was surprised to learn that info on him is pretty fucking sparse since he wasn't well acclaimed in his lifetime.

But Barnes is pretty good, I might check it out. So thanks for the mention m8.

This one is very nice and comprehensive + split up on history of Vienna as well as individual pieces that he composed. I like the way its structured.

Which is not nearly as comprehensive or historically focused, but gives you a good overview of the meat of his life and work.

One of these writes about how Beethoven reportedly hid indoors with pillows over his ears when Vienna was under siege because he feared for his hearing getting even worse from cannon fire.
