Hey, guys, I need a favor. Somebody give me a symbolic name for a prison. Since you're all literary nerds, this should be trivial for you, right?

Picture unrelated.

Interestingly enough, there is one man who successfully "escaped" from Alcatraz (as in reached another landmass): John K. Giles. He stole an Army uniform from the laundry room and snuck onto an Army laundry tug, which then landed at Angel Island, where he was caught and returned. (The people you may be thinking of as escaping, the ones who the Clint Eastwood movie is based on, almost certainly died).

John K. Giles was an interesting guy, and I've often felt that a thread on him would be interesting. He was an extremely intelligent man, who first began a life of crime because he needed money to buy textbooks for his engineering courses at UC Berkeley. He was finally done up for killing a cop in a failed robbery (although, in actual fact, he probably didn't kill her). He was also a published author of Westerns, and a student of philosophy (he was a devotee of Schopenhauer, in particular), who received several patents while in prison. Also a very well-regarded gardener on Alcatraz, and a homosexual.
