Since the rise of the e-book/e-reader we have seen a decline in readership. They also serve to devalue books, to the point where many authors have to essentially follow the music industry format (artists release music for free/nearly free, only make profit from shows and merch).

95% of the books I read, I read them once through, then never again. I don't want to "own" books. If I buy them, I sell them when I've read them or give them away. And I usually buy used books anyways, so no profit goes to the publisher.

So I consider piracy just a shortcut to my library. I could go to the library, waste gas, time, library resources, but I'd rather just download it. I don't see any harm there because lots of people are willing to buy the book, physical copies even.

Most libraries have Overdrive anyways, so the line between borrowing/downloading is even more blurred. My local library buys books and pays Overdrive subscription fees. I feel, in some way, that this entitles me to download whatever I please. And further, whoever bought the downloaded item originally did pay for it. So it's all good, right!

This is kinda mostly accurate; only thing I'd argue is that in the case of smaller presses or self-publishing it's better to support them financially since a handful of sales can make or break their ability to keep going.

In some cases, though, piracy actually helps a work get discovered and become more profitable, since most people aren't willing to risk paying full price for an author they've never heard of. What im trying to say is this. I dont give a shit about the norms of the forum im browsing. Do your thing if it suits you. But, Stop buying in to the whole cult fantasy of /lit/. You can enjoy a book if it is read to you, by some other dude... But, you know. You could also be that guy that tries so desperately to impress girls by flipping up your Rusell book on the buss. Its your choice. But, know this. Girls dont get impressed by this.

I don't see why you would care about people using e-readers. Also, this notion that people are reading less seems to be completely unfounded. Infact anything i've read has pointed that people are reading /more/ than in the past. How does the availability of e-readers cause people to read less?
