I actually just finished it and am off to Arendt's Origins of Totalitarianism. Behemoth is really my first dive into the history of national socialism so I can't speak to how it compares to other books on the subject. I enjoyed the read quite a bit though and finished it in about less than a week which I hadn't planned on when I started; It's not nearly as dry as it could be considering the amount of names of various officials and bureaucracies. His breakdown of the economic structure was surprisingly accessible. I dunno if you have any specific questions I'd be happy to try and answer them but I definitely don't have much of a reference point to compare it to.

Full reddit/b8 shelves get like 2 - 3 comments but not that many honestly.

Most of the "boring" ones are the ones that have a mish-mash of random incidental books, entry level /lit/ memes, and childhood YA. They tend to be small and offer nothing distinctive.

I will give a shoutout to >>8824289 guy though, he'd get more replies if /lit/ wasn't so pseud, but he's hampered by the whole "lel I'm not gonna post everything cause I'm busy" thing.

Giant shelves where you can barely make out titles also tend not to get too many replies cause no one cares enough to scrutinize your picture to discern what you have.

If anything it is obsession with A Thousand Plateaus, with Anti-Oedipus as a less-cherished companion piece. I happen to have 2 copies cos I picked up a Penguin on the cheap one day.

A Thousand Plateaus, particularly The Rhizome introduction, One or One Thousand Wolves, and the chapter on Becoming Animal are some of the more formative pieces of writing I have ever read. What I attach to most you could call their distinction between Arborescent thought and Rhizomatic thought, but I often find it more useful to articulate it in one of the (many) other ways thry describe it: the Ontology of "to be" as opposed to the "Anti-Ontology of And." "To be" categorizes, labels, names, structuralizes; "and" shatters off into multitudes, multiplies thought, multiplies clauses, multiplies possibility. When one grasps the repressive, stifling nature of ontology, rejects it, and instead opens themself to the maelstrom of ADD scattered rhizome thought of the "and" ... For me, this is a very freeing thing.

I was diagnosed ADHD once. I scoff at the idea of clinicalizing and medicating that shit. Be mad. Fuck normalcy and homogenization. This is why some of the lit I enjoy most is books like DH Lawrence's Women in Love. The tension between Ontology and Rhizome, between Oedipus and Schizo, is fucking everywhere in that book. It is a good narrative for learning how to barf up the toxic redpill of fascism

Thanks for that! I've read something in passing about Rhizome in Negri's 'Empire' but your post made me remember that I've been meaning to get around to reading anti-oedipus for a while now (kinda bought it because A Thousand Plateaus wasn't available and because of its /lit/ meme status).

How dense is it really though? I've read the Greeks, Freud and Marx so I'm not totally helpless but reactions on /lit/ range from enthusiasm to downright vilification

Deleuze guy here, Desu Desu. I don't know why you don't get comments, but I will echo the other poster and say that a huge part of it is how early you get in the thread. For my part, I sperg out on these threads when I get a free minute, like between two students at ye auld tutoring job, so I work my way through the thread slowly and also spend more time on the "individual shelves" photos because it is easier to read the bindings.

But I will say that you have a very respectable set of shelves there. Maybe the most well rounded shelves in the whole thread. I particularly appreciate your collection of myth / fairy tale from all around the world, from Greeks to Russians to English to Japanese to Chinese and beyond. This leads me to suspect that you would draw in more comments if you dedicated at least one shelf to memeshit like most every other stupid poster does.

I will say this about the difficulty of Anti Oedipus. It is probably not the most user friendly book in the world. Even if you have some theory background. Ive had a lot of friends you might call Lacanians and Marxists try it out and come out with blank stares and incredulity.

Anti Oedipus is pretty memey, and it is kinda (left)"reactionary" in the sense that its entire argument is situated in response to Freudian thought and the roots of thought that D+G trace back in history from Freud's conception of the Oedipus Complex.

A Thousand Plateaus saw the pair set out deliberately to write a more self contained book. I say that in a very loose sense, because its structure is very unusual and it can be read almost in an arbitrary order, like a mixtape on shuffle, which is actually something that they recommend in the Introduction.

I would suggest for a Deleuze and Guattari reading list the following:

1. Foucault's introduction in the Penguin Anti Oedipus.

2. Anti Oedipus. Chapter 1.

3. A Thousand Plateaus, Introduction (The Rhizome)

4. Go back and read Anti Oedipus. Chapter 1.

From there you can either just keep blowing right on through Anti Oedipus or you can skip around their entire corpus, maybe even starting with Thousand Plateaus.

If you don't have ATP, google is your friend. There are readily available free pdfs of the whole book, and even some guy who illustrated the ATP with page number references to the edition that the pdf is based off of. I really, highly recommend not skipping the Introduction to ATP before trying Anti Oedipus - evne though they use a completely different vocabulary in both books (ATP is mostly plant and animal imagery and metaphor, ie rhizomes, wasps, orchids, and packs, and Anti Oedipus is more mechanical and desiring machines and couplings) but their thought is definitely more accessibly presented in the second iteration.

When you see what they're about and understand how they use language, Anti Oedipus becomes muuuuuch easier.

I'm a history grad so was very disappointed too. The premise of the book is shoehorned in and Frankopan attempts to stretch it across the entirety of human history (e.g. the silk roads still exist but have shifted position- so how are they still silk roads? should just call them trade routes). He also makes the mistake of buying into a Guns, Germs and Steel-esque manner of apologizing for Western history and trying to pull reasons for why the West isn't somewhat exceptional in terms of human history from out of his arse. Western exceptionalism is indeed a historical meme, however it is impossible to deny that there were specific conditions that combined to make the Western nations the predominant powers of their day.

I spent a week reading it in depth (5 hours a day) and came up with dozens more points I wasn't happy with and wrote them in the margins. I'd suggest giving it a read, but only in a context in which you are examining the different perceptions of Western Imperialism and the (in my opinion, flimsy) excuses that some scholars are now attempting to make for the great divergence.
