>> No.881799

But...Tolstoy is the poor-mans tolstoy. Dostoyevski is more like the brooding man's Tolstoy.

>> No.883215

on a related question, I'm thinking of buying a book that compiles all of Dostoevsky's short stories, though it's slightly expensive. should I buy it? what would I find in it?

Poorly educated savages.

you would probably find all of Dostoevsky's short stories in it.

>> No.883236

Demons starts out funnier and ends up darker than any of his books, it's a bit uneven but if you like Dostoevsky that's nothing you won't have experienced before.

Demons is so underrated
I loved it.

Savage satire on nihilists and the like.

>> No.883262

The Idiot was a bit too slow for me, so I never got past part one.

But, TBK, and Crime were just amazing. I flew through Crime and punishment just taking breaks to eat, drink, and sleep.

Also, Dream of a Ridiculous Man is gold.

>> No.883366

worth persevering with the idiot , it gains pace and has a fantastic ending imo

will defo pick up demons then thanks

>> No.884048

I really, really enjoyed Demons. Just if you are to read it, make sure you don't cheap out. I bought a cheap copy of the book and it was riddled with errors. Regardless, the book was fantastic. It is politically charged and is defiantly one of his darkest books. I also found I was easily able to get into the book.

>> No.884051

Demons is by far his finest work. It's better then the boy-scout rally that is The Brothers Karamazov.

>> No.884055

I've had a copy of 'House of the Dead' and 'Poor Folk' on my shelf for a few weeks now. Which one should I read first?
