Wow great thread. Glad I came on /lit/ today otherwise I wouldve missed this gem

I wouldn't call it a gem, it's more like atheist wish fulfillment where the enemy is the church.

But God is real in it.

I suppose you think The Shadow of the Wind is a pretty edgy book title too

Yeah, the 'atheism' of the books is way over sold. The books assume Catholicism is true, then complain about the unjustice of reality. Well yeah the god of the Bible is pretty messed up, but that isn't atheism.

Book 2 is good, the rest are forgettable. The ending of book 3 sucks.

It isn't atheistic, its gnostic and somewhat pantheist.

Thing is, he isn't atheist. He is Satanist.

Does placing the churches origin on an interdimensional alien really negate it as being atheist in nature?

The word yall are looking for is misotheist, although on it's face it doesn't appear to explore misotheism from a good understanding of christianity because people who can't into subtext in fiction just think "muh multidimensional alien isn't the xtian god."

I'd say the progression of morality/taboo breaking (killing a child), immortality seeking (bringing that child back from the dead), and lover's suicide masked by the core "I want to punch god in the face" plot actually do a fair job of expressing misotheism in a good understanding of xtianity.
