They're adult-focused. I would put Perelandra as the equal of any Narnia book, and a few scenes in the other books, as far as writing skill and sense of wonder, but they're probably less-known just because adults don't read fantasy as much.

They're quite poorly written and in what feels like a high-fantasy style rather than a science fiction one. It's far more thinly veiled Christian allegory and rhetoric than Narnia, written at a time when he was still honing his writing and aimed at an audience of adults rather than children. The audience for SF even back then was far less theistically minded, so you can see there are a number of reasons why it wasn't all that popular.

I read some interpretations of it which concluded that he was arguing throughout the thing that it's okay to kill sinners as they "become" sin, which is a bit disgusting. The characters are also rubbish cartoonish caricatures.

It's incredibly disgusting that someone would try to make Lewis out to be some sort of murderous straw crusader. Where was this?

The Un-Man was very much not human, and was one of the best parts of the series, and one of its best science fiction ideas. What would a man taken over by an alien entity who held the causation of pain as the highest good really be like? What would our responsibilities be toward such a being? And any argument from what happened to the faculty in Hideous Strength would have to ignore how it came directly from their own hubris and not from some sort of low-Anglican Merlinist militia.

Surely you've noticed how juvenile The Screwtape Letters were? Lewis was a hack, assuming a soft-Christian cover whilst being semi-secretly fire and brimstone, piggybacking off the success of Tolkein, and the ideas of MacDonald and others.

First time on the board, so not sure if I'm gonna get laughed off for asking what may be a common question.

Love LoTR, where can I get some more of that style crack?

Some more context...

I didn't like The Hobbit as much, still okay.

I've read all of ASOIAF so far except for the Winds excerpts. It's *okay* at times, a grinding chore to read at others. Too many characters out of the woodwork all the time, makes it hard to follow or care about any one of them.

Read the first two books of Discworld... mildly interesting so far. I think I'll continue them.

I love the Harry Potter series. Deep, high literature? No. But I had an awesome time reading it.

Also loved Ready Player One, but that's more sci-fi than high fantasy.

Look up classic fantasy. The Worm Orobouros, The Well at World's End, The King of Elfland's Daughter. For more recent stuff try The High House, I read that last week and was pleasantly surprised at the mythopoeic mood of it. It's an epic journey across a house so huge there are countries in it.

Is the way of kings a ruse? I'm reading it now and getting kind of worried. People were talking about it like it was another song of ice and fire or wheel of time. It kind of just seems like a bunch of awkwardly phrased videogamey shit that over explains itself so far.

the only place to get stuff like LOTR is in world mythology. he wasnt really writing novels, he was writing a world, and he comes as close as is humanly possible to creating a mythology from whole cloth. ASoIaF can be viewed as a series written to be as different from Tolkien as possible. Martin set out in his crafting of it to un-romance high fantasy, to make gritty and vulgar what Tolkien had kept fairly pristine in his work. So with that in mind, there's a lot more out there to try. You've still barely read anything the genre has to offer. You can try reading older authors who were contemporary with Tolkien if you think that would be more to your liking, but I will say to not let Martin scare you off from recent fantasy.

How far into it are you? I had trouble getting into it because I didn't realize who the real main character was until halfway through the book or around there. You don't even meet Kaladin until several chapters in. I also had trouble caring about the world building at first because it was fragmented and hard to see the broader picture. Simply progressing through the book made me care about Kaladin more and accumulate enough information to become interested in the hinted-at mysteries of the setting.

Yes, the reported animal and child sacrifices, alongside more benign things like rain-making spells. The witch cult phenomenon is nonetheless a good well for genre fiction.

I maintain that the removal of a power model, where women had a strong role, was part of the motivation for eradicating witchcraft and paganism.

Institutional Christianity has admirable aspects, nevertheless it is misogynistic (this is despite the role models in the bible e.g. Phoebe, Mary Magdalene)

Organised Christianity did a number on witches just as they did the gnostics.

Also stevian you are an idiot, make a goodreads author account, and shill your book there.
Say you will give a free copy to the first 20 persons who ask in exchange for a fair review(learn to use the pm system etc).

Make sure the twenty persons you choose has like 800 friends minimum (reach as many people as possible). If it's good, see people shill your book for you.

A lot of the books I read had the authors start on goodreads. You would be an idiot not to use a tool that helps you get intouch with your "fans" directly.

This is actually what I didn't like about Jackson's movies. Like C. Tolkien says, it's an action movie for 12-20 year olds. But "Fellowship," for instance, is 80% descriptions of them walking through the woods. In "Two Towers," the siege of Helm's Deep is like 15 pages, whereas it's the central event of the movie version.

She's not all that bad when she shuts her mouth and becomes all introspective and shit. unfortunately she tends to ruin that when she opens her mouth and begins speaking out loud again.

I hope she meets the main cast at some point, otherwise i can't see myself caring all that much about her story, even if she does end up playing bigger part in some future book.

The Reds were bred for manual labor and accidentally selected for quick wits and sharp thinking, especially because their generations were so short. They're still on average way dumber than the Golds, which is why Darrow feels so disconnected from the Reds when he goes back.

Also he sucks at military strategy, he only wins when he charms people that are good at it.

I just end up getting wowed by fantasy worlds that are, unfortunately, outside fantasy novels. I'm significantly more intrigued by the implications behind a setting like
>Dark Souls
Or any of the random weebshit anime that are all style over substance. They hint at interesting worlds, but they're usually lacking under that vibrant coat of paint.

Fantasy novels, on the other hand, seem to do very little in the way of vibrancy with their settings. A lot of them are low-magic medieval worlds with some slightly different additions to make it _just_ set apart from GoT or LotR by a few inches.

I usually find the characters in novels are more engaging, but the world is often lackluster. Call me an autist, but what's the point in making a fantasy world, rooted in the FANTASTICAL, if you're just going to ape another author's concepts without trying to put your own spin on it?

Just finished this. Wonder if anyone wants to talk about it with me.

So everyone though Moore was crazy, but he wasn't. It was his son, it his son was talking to his other hemisphere right? That was why he kept saying "imagine you are Siri". So he didn't deserve to die. He wasn't being controlled at all. Am I getting this right?

Why did they land at heaven?

What was the importance of the echopraxia bug? Was it the bicamerals starting their super hive-mind plan?

So the aliens in Blindsight considered the thoughts of man kind to be a virus, which the bicamerals agreed with. A glitch in god's universe. So 'god' sent the Portia to fix it and the bicamerals carried out his plan to get bruks infected. Not to wipe out life but just sentience.

Lots of other questions but maybe this could be a start if anyone has any thoughts. I don't know if spoilers are necessary or if everyone has already read this.

BakaBT isn't a real private tracker. Anyone can use it and there's no application or interview process, you just sign up and verify your email. There's also no real seeding requirements. I have an appalling ratio and I still haven't been cut off yet.

All having an account does is allow you to search the torrents on the site. If you're not a member you can easily circumvent this by just searching "[anime name] bakabt" and it should come up on google no problem.

Also they do use a whitelist for torrent clients, but if you're in a private tracker your client is probably okay.

Ah I've been waiting for this conversation for weeks.

Addressing your points one at a time.

On Moore, that's certainly one interpretation. The theory I came up with was that his was receiving Siri's messages (AKA the entirety of Blindsight) at the start, but over time he either went mad (through Portia), or Rorschach survived and was broadcasting further messages to bend Moore to its will. Another idea I had later was that Siri and the rest of the crew were killed instantly upon engaging Rorschach, and that Siri's messages/Blindsight were just an illusion to fool Earth into thinking Rorschach was destroyed/mindwash Moore.

I don't think they landed in Heaven, but Bruks went onto the Internet/Splinternet and accessed Heaven from there. Didn't they land in a defunct combat flotilla thing?

The Echopraxia bug didn't really fit into the story with me. It seemed like a very late name drop, as opposed to a relevant part of the story like with blindsight in, well, Blindsight. I suppose religion, the theme of the book, is all about mimicking others without a choice, but the importance of the actual infection which caused the dancing soldiers was lost on me. Maybe it'll clear up with re-reading.

Your last section clashes with my opinions I drew from the novel. Yes, the Rorschach aliens considered humanity a virus. I don't know if the Bicamerals agreed with this.. To them I think "God" was the glitch/virus, and the rest of the "digital universe" was simply reality. Watts himself describes "viral deities" in his notes and references section. God was on the side of entropy, away from life. Valarie wanted to "get along" with god, but couldn't, because she was life and therefore against entropy (I distinctly remember the section detailing how life slowed down entropy).

You've really confused me because at time of reading I really thought Portia was sent down by Rorschach to eliminate Icarus, but now I'm thinking completely differently. It's obvious that The Bicamerals/Vampires/Other non-consciousnesses are on the same team as Rorschach, but against what? Against Portia/"God"? Where does that leave humans? Simply a transition state for the non-conscious Earth populace? I remember that Blindsight for sure but it's been a while. I might do a diagram.

Fuck sake now I will have to reread them both.

The intentions of Portia are definitely confusing. I have to go back and read that whole action scene again. Portia lashed out after Valerie attacked? If the whole thing was gods plan then Portia wanted Moore to destroy Icarus as well as come back to earth?

I think it's a testament to his skill but we'll see.

>>8770879

I'm a different guy (>>8770976), but Starfish is very good. It's much easier to understand and doesn't have as many "wowee" ideas as Blind/Echo, but it's good. Maelstrom is worse but still readable. Behemoth is pretty bad, don't bother with it unless you really need to know how things end. It's probably Watts' edgiest.

His The Things and Island/Giants short stories are extremely good, and The Colonel is set in the Blindsight universe, but it didn't leave much of an impression on me. I can't remember if I read any other of his shorts.

I'd also recommend looking up a Let's Play of the game SOMA. Watts wasn't involved, but it's very similar tonally and thematically to his work, and it's very well written. It's about an underwater research station that houses the last of humanity after the surface world is destroyed by a projectile impact.

Casual reminder that Tolkien wrote LotR for academic and cultural purposes. He hated the fandom even back in the 60's, when people were dressing up as elves and hobbits at conventions.

Also,

it could have been worse

Yeah I know, don't they use (used to?) his books to teach english in american highschools or some shit just as in Italy they had kids reading The Divine Comedy, maybe I'm wrong but to my ignorance, they had Tolkiens´ books in schools.

Do you know where to find 'The Island and other stories' ?

There are lots of links but they are all dead, and I cba to download all of them on their own then convert and deal with errors.

In English we have more than one classic so we teach different ones at different schools.

>It's the people that act all snobbish and behave like we should read dino /lit/, and dino/lit/ alone.
Who? That literally never happens. It's just the one anon posting his crappy OC whenever someone mentions an old book.

There are lots of places to get public domain books. That site seems strange though. It looks like pirate stuff. If so I guess only russia can be so blatant.

Oh yeah it is true, in my shitty thirdworld school they didn't encourage me to read anything besides schoolbooks. I read a lot because my dad was a writter and I looked up to him, in my country is Pedro Paramo the book that they use.
