I have a good grasp of economics and I'm aware of the classic concepts and schools of thought, however, I'm looking for recommendations for something dealing with the modern financial system, maybe something about the IMF, the EU, or the 2008 crisis.

PS: please don't recommend something with a title like "how the banks are ripping you off and how you can protect yourself" or "why the government is lying about your money". let's keep it a little patrician guys.

The first is how the United States achieved financial superiority over most of the world in the 20th century while the next details the 21st century world economy. You can also read articles he writes on his site which describe current events.

He was the first to predict the collapse of the housing bubble in 2006, http://michael-hudson.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/RoadToSerfdom.pdf, and how protectionist policies would soon become very appealing to westerners. For Killing the Host he did so much research on Mesopotamian debt systems that he received a Peabody fellowship.
