Jesus this story is fucking depressing. Was the whole point to illustrate that the gods and fate don't give a shit about people, and that you can be destined for the most fucked up possible life, regardless of what you do because of what your ancestors did? I mean seriously, did Oedipus actually deserve any of that?

>> No.868871

No, he totally got shafted.

Kinda.

Honestly that seems like the point of a lot of Ancient Greek literature. They seemed to have a fairly fatalistic outlook on life, and I guess their mythology kind of reflected how powerless they felt compared to the power of nature.

Yes. He was a sophist.

I'd say it's more of a hybris-nemesis thing than fate..

but it was dramatic, right?

fate can be cruel

>fate can be cruel

but whats funny and ultimately tragic is that if Oedipus was never told about 'his fate' he would never have sought to avoid it, and by doing so fulfill it.

lol i guess so, but this brings up the question as to the actual point of prophecy. it would seem that prophecy is simply to drive and enforce a certain path of fate, rather than anything else. riddles that cause the fulfillment of the prophecy and the destined path that the gods or fate want to occur.

Fuckin' Fates! Why do they do it?

The gods weren't punishing Oedipus, they were punishing his dad. Laius was a total dick, when he found out his infant son might grow up to kill him, he immediately ordered for the baby to be stranded in the woods to die. He was being punished for kidnapping and raping the King of Pisa's young son, Chrysippus.

but Oedipus was fated to sleep with his mother. there was no reason for that to be fated other than spitefulness on the part of the gods.

No, it was Zeus being a pervert. He arranged for Oedipus to become a motherfucker so he would have some fap material.

Greek Gods are such assholes.

Remember that part of the Iliad when Achilles decides to get back in the battle and Zeus foresses Ilion would not stand a chance, so he tells the gods they can help which ever sides they want and sits back to enjoy the fight?

You can interpret the entire Greek mythos as a simple explanadum: How can life be so cruel and unfair? It could never happen at random, there _must_ be some volition behind such a terrible human condition.

Yeah, maybe a HUMAN lifetime. But a perverted god's lifetime?
