Why is this board so full of formalists? Do you seriously believe that formalism is the height of literature, or are you just completely unaware of how literature works?

You read to feel sophisticated and recognising formalism is the easiest way to feel sophisticated. That's my guess

It was cool and fun when people first started using blank verse but now everyone does it simply because it's easier. I can't see how New Formalism could be anything but an improvement for the state of poetry. At the very least artists in any medium should master the old forms before experimenting. In fine arts there's a dearth of people who can actually draw, it's as if the current generation of art students forgot that Picasso et al. were master draughtsmen before they started doing their abstract or non-representational pictures.

It's an outgrowth of Sola Scriptura.

>> No.8677174

The reformers didn't study and discuss the historical context of the Bible? They didn't use language outside of the Bible to define doctrine? Protestant pastors don't exegete and teach the Bible? Sola scriptura means that scripture is the primary source of doctrine, not the only source of doctrine. It doesn't mean scripture in isolation. If you read the first paragraph of the Wikipedia page on sola scriptura you'd know that.
