I know this is all heresy, and coming from a writer no less, but I don’t care. I’m trying to understand why Shakespeare is still being read hundreds of years after his death. What is so profound and incredible in his work? I cannot for the life of me see it.

It’s 16th century schlock, and I’m pretty sure that was the point. Shakespeare’s plays were the equivalent of a big-budget movie, designed to distract and offer some form of entertainment, and nothing more. This is not high-art, and whoever first claimed such is an idiot. And it doesn’t have to be high-art. If people still get some entertainment out of Hamlet, good for them.

If you want an honest answer, it's the psychological realism of some of his characters. Name a 16th century writer that was capable of writing with this much verisimilitude:

>>8650904
It's his phrases, many of which are so well-done they've been quoted far too often and become cliches.

Many of the plots that he uses are recycled from elsewhere and strain credulity so much that if you came up with them these days you'd be laughed out of every publisher's office.

>> No.8651087

>>8651042
Shakespeare's work wasn't about the plots, it was about the characters and language. And that's true of nearly every great writer.
