It's not like it's going to be dazzling prose, but Applegate has an excellent storytelling voice. Atmosphere's great, SF sensibility is surprisingly good for a Star Trek ripoff, Jake's final fall is a beautiful tragedy.

Just remember to check on which books were ghostwritten so you don't have to read about cows or Helmacrons or giant Rachel again. The whole non-ghostwritten series isn't even that long.
