What are some good starting books to read about the World Wars? I'd like to start from WWI to understand the relations between nations at the time, the politics leading to the war, the actual battles fought, and the aftermath following.

Autobiographies are encouraged.

I think Sleepwalkers explains how WWI came to be. Haven't read it though, was a recommendation from my history teacher.

For WWII Geofrey Roberts is very good on the Soviet position. Also for Soviet Foreign policy (with Europe) Gorodetsky's "Grand Delusions" is excelent. If you want general history in 1 volume Mazower has a good book (don't like his other books though), and Rich Evans has a famous 3 volume series on Germany. One thing I recommend is to be very careful in trusting views on the Soviets... increadible the amount of rubbish
