I said Newman, but to be honest, Townsend is p good too. At least way more deserving than Dylan.

And his mini opera (A Quick One While He's Away) is like a cuck hymn (though musically superb), so the swede cucks could've given it to him for that.

Seriously though, if anyone had to have it, it should've been Newman. Just Guilty and Feels Like Home are better than anything written by Dylan or anyone else ITT.

Townes Van Zandt, the song writer every songwriter calls the best.

Hank Williams obviously could have won. Willie Nelson is more profolic than Dylan, writing almost 3000 songs in his life.

Merle Haggard and David Allen Coe are two others i think could honestly be comparable to Dylan in both quality and quantity.

The best lyrcists are found in country music. But this will never be recognized in academia because its not associated with the left, which is a shame.

Also Kris Kristofferson.

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS

Cohen deserves it way more than Dylan.
Also because Cohen wrote the theme song to /r9k/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYkJuAb0mMk

I asked my father,
I said, "father change my name."
The one I'm using now it's covered up
With fear and filth and cowardice and shame.
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me,
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me.
He said, "i locked you in this body,
I meant it as a kind of trial.
You can use it for a weapon,
Or to make some woman smile."
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me,
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me.
"then let me start again, " i cried,
"please let me start again,
I want a face that's fair this time,
I want a spirit that is calm."
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me,
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me.
"i never never turned aside, " he said,
"i never walked away.
It was you who built the temple,
It was you who covered up my face."
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me,
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me.
And may the spirit of this song,
May it rise up pure and free.
May it be a shield for you,
A shield against the enemy.
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me,
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me.
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me,

>he is an incredible poet
Why is it that the morons who are most ignorant of poetry are also the exact same loudmouthed morons who feel most confident in calling rappers poets?

If I showed you a poem (as in a good poem that took intelligence and skill to write, not a top 40 pop song), could you tell me what meter it was written in? Could you identify the difference between the stressed and unstressed syllables? Its approximate age, the genre conventions it subscribes to or parodies?

Something tells me that you'd fail spectacularly

None of them. "Literary" song lyrics always come off as pretentious and they subtract from the actual music. The people who go into pop music wanting to be "literary" usually can't sing or play an instrument worth a shit, and the music they make always end up being garbage. Beyond that the lyrics are just middlebrow poetry about >muh love.

So you only ever end up with /lit/ lyrics if they're humorous/satirical.

I've listened to his first three albums multiple times each and there's absolutely nothing impressive about the lyricism on a single track. His delivery and the music made for him to perform over, fine, but the actual lyrics themselves are totally uninteresting and only discussed because of their subject matter and Kendrick's celebrity. Nobody would dare compare him to the great writers of the 20th century if they had even half a clue of what they were saying, because the difference in ability is so painfully obvious. It's like comparing Kanye West to Beethoven

So Zappa, then? most of his lyrics are purposely meaningless and he wrote albums worth of humorous/satirical content.

He could be singing about cottage cheese and throw stuff like pic related on the "background".

you can say the same about Bob Dylan or any musician actually. That their lyrics don't stand out outside of their music and even if they are decent or good, they're elevated by being performed by the musician. "In the kitchen
With a screaming triple amputee...
Its completion depends solely
On my needs...
Said amputee's stumps
Are my way of saying... "Thank you
Just for being you."
Its fear tastes better than its limbs.

Terror of morality
I draw from the slowly dying damned
Monsters live behind my eyes;
I let them out and people die.
And all the grave worms
That come for their piece of meat?
I give them dead things..
The wretched living are mine alone

Fright mounts with the body count
To which anthropomancy predicts a decline
In all of God's creation,
Can there be a lifestyle that's better than this?

I mark my territory
With their blood and excritement
And adipocere...
I can find my way in the dark;
My fulfilment is habitually necromanic
And anal abusive..
Seen through the eyes of a mortician

They've "caught" me, as they call it;
My teeth and my semen have betrayed me..
Nevermore!
Tests to gauge my rationale,
The likes of which these feeble minds have
Never seen.

Rorschach blotters,
My responses to which inspire fear...
From my lizard side,
The amoral alien speaks;
"These aren't butterflies,
I see a face I'd like to burn."

Obfuscation
Of the authorities with lies,
And my natur
Alability to charm and be me,
Or whoever they want;
I've known all minds by divine right."

Could you identify the difference between the stressed and unstressed syllables? Its approximate age, the genre conventions it subscribes to or parodies?

I could do all of those things, and there are definitely some underground hip hop artists (not rappers like Kodak Black or Fetty Wap, or even the bigger names, whoever they might be these days) who have works that I would consider highly poetic.

Check out Blue Scholars with tracks like Joe Metro, Anna Karenina, Loyalty, and Still Got Love for a great example.
Atmosphere is another good one with songs like Sunshine and The Girl with the Tattooed Hands.
Also Brother Ali. Songs like Tightrope and Uncle Sam Goddam are a little in-your-face with their SJW-type messages, Forest Whitaker is a little better.

Not saying of these would be on the level of the great poets we talk about, or that they are worthy of study as poetry in an academic setting, but they certainly qualify as poetry and have something over shit like Lil Uzi Vert.

Wayne can write a good pun, and that's about it. He rarely has anything to say that isn't "get money, fuck bitches" like every other rapper out there. At least the acts I mentioned make an attempt to speak to something more meaningful.

I can understand your dislike of Atmosphere, they're not gonna be everybody's cup of tea, same with Brother Ali. But have you actually listened to Blue Scholars? Go into any of those tracks I listed with an open mind and you won't be disappointed.
