What's the deal with semicolons?

>> No.8602490

they're stronger than a comma but lighter than a period

>> No.8602527

Semicolons are great.

That sounds stupid but seriously, I'm a big fan of them.

read the first page of Mrs. Dalloway.

>> No.8602564

There're two reasons to use them.
1) To unite two sentences as more directly related to each other than isolated sentences.
>I walked down the path. The sun was shining far too brightly once I turned the corner ; I was forced to squint. I carried on walking past the supermarket.
2) When listing things that could be confusing if you used just commas, especially if the list contains subordinate clauses.
>The supermarket had undergone some new developments: a car park, with space for thirty more cars; a trolley bay; two new parking meters, which seemed to have already been vandalized; and a rather disaffected security guard, who was at that moment snoozing against the trolley bay, which likely explained the vandals setting in so quickly.
