Any books your parents wouldn't let you read as a kid/teenager?

>Pic related

>> No.8593257

Nope. They didn't let me watch R-rated movies, but they were happy to see me reading whatever I got my hands on. Not that they'd have recognized any books that were explicit. They also allowed me unrestricted access to the Internet, allowing me to easily circumvent the 'no R-rated' rule.

It was strange knowing that I could fap to futa and watch beheading videos all I wanted, but Hollywood sex 'n violence was a no-go. American upbringings are weird.

No.

My mum was supportive but politely disinterested, and my dad remembered reading "adult" shit as a kid.

When it came to anything else they were way too strict. But not with books; in truth, books are considerably less visceral.

My mom reads YA and read this series all the time when I was a kid. I wasn't allowed to read it and by the time I was, I knew it was trash. For the better probably

I remember my mom took away some shitty YA urban fantasy novel that I checked out of the library when I was a kid. I don't know what tipped her off - maybe there was something lewd on the cover that I was too innocent to pick up on - but she flipped through it and said it was inappropriate. That's the only time though.

Yeah, they were well read.

My parents did not censor anything when I was a kid.

Same for me.

I had a student last year whose parents wouldn't let her read Running with Scissors so I gave her my copy. Funniest part is, based on what I've read of her work, the girl probably writes stuff they would consider way worse than anything Augusten Burroughs has to say. Also, I feel like there is a chance she browses /lit/, so if you read this, please don't out me.

My mom confiscated copys from me in third grade, 5th grade, and seventh grade. granted i was reading it compulsively and looking for copies at yard sales.

At the same time I was reading IT and actively looking for dirty looking books at the library, so I have no idea what her plan was.

>> No.8595463

The only time I wasn't allowed something is when I had to go to my room when my parents rented Boogie Nights. I think most children are good at self-censoring anything really inappropriate.

And while my parents never told me any books were trash, I sorta realized on my own that Goosebumps were like junk food and I always limited myself when I went to the library.

Grew up in a super religious family. When I was in maybe third grade, I became interested in the Harry Potter series. Parents freaked out for a couple days and tried to confiscate it but eventually gave up.

Weird part is they were totally cool with me reading about world religions and talking to officials of those religions.
