is a literature degree worth it today?

>> No.8553983

Worth what?

(Snarkiness aside, IMO it's a good idea to pair it with another degree as a second major, or at least minor).

If you are actually a patrician, yes
If you have no land/passive income, and you have or plan on having mouths to feed, then no

It depends. What are you going to school to do?

If you want to just learn a lot about books, then sure it's worth it.
If you want to write books, then just start writing them, no degree needed.
If you want to be a literature professor and don't mind expensive grad school in an uncertain job market, then maybe.
If you want to make a decent living, then no. Get a library card and keep posting here.

I'm new here. Have you actually found this to be a decent place for literary growth?

PhD programs are fully funded.

Not the guy you replied to, but I've been coming to Lit for about a year. Great book recs and taste (the memes are good, the charts are good), but a lot of the discussion is awful/non-existent. 1 in every 30 threads might be worthwhile. Other than that it's lot of showing off (not that anyone here has a lot to show off about), bitching at each other over differences of opinions, and memeing. If you're new to 4chan, just look at the recs (in the sticky) and read them. You're not missing much here. I come here out of habit now. Takes up my valuable reading time. Oh, and if you know things about literature/are reasonably well read/know your memes, things are occasionally hilarious. It's rare, but great. Hard to find people who can make a good joke about literature with some obscure references involved (obviously).

Absolutely not. Don't listen to anyone who says otherwise. This place is only good for the memos and the occasional decent discussion. Most people here have barely any idea what they're on about half the time, and many posters are probably no older than 16.

If you live in a country with free college, yes.
Otherwise, no.

No. But you can buy my doctorate for the cost of my student loan, if you like. It would save you a lot of time.
