The real Thomas Pynchon has been dead for decades. After Gravity's Rainbow was published he experienced seven years of excruciating writer's block. Finally, in 1980, believing he would never write again, he committed suicide on the streets of New York by slipping on a banana peel he'd placed in his own path.
