One thing about russian intellectuals is, that they are usually relatively poor. You might be a professor and get a fairly decent salary but it's nothing compared to their western colleagues. In the west you have guys with cardigans and expensives glasses who drink red wine and will have nice discussions over a nice dinner and then everyone goes to bed early. In Russia I know some philosophy professors who will go to their dacha, get shitfaced and then have fistfights over Hegel before they fuck their female colleagues. They're patrician as fuck but didn't forget what it means to be alive.

Slavic countries are incredibly well versed, their education is some of the best, finest and deals with a huge variety of topics. I went to a regular (public) high school in Turkey, and I took all these lessons, along with English and German. Yet, they mean nothing unless you are invested in the subject yourself. I would think it is the same for other countries: Unless you are going to a "selected" school, your lessons will be mostly empty, no matter how broad they are.

Depends on where you want to go. In north-western parts of Russia Finns and people from baltic countries are nothing unusual, but I think they tend to like people from Finland a bit more. My eccentric English teacher tried to teach us some of that but otherwise, no. Psychology was an elective, and being Canadians we were forced to learn French. History was also an elective available only in our last year, other than that we had something called "social studies." In social studies all history had to relate to Canada somehow or teach us about our values of equality and multiculturalism. There was also a disproportionate focus on the federal Liberal Party. For example we spent a lot more time reading about Pearson and his brave quest to bring peace and give us a new flag (yay!) then Diefenbaker. Diefenbaker was presented as this kooky guy who liked nuclear weapons and was basically an American. The class had a round of jokes about Albertans and then one bully slapped me on the neck because I was from Calgary had ought to "have a red neck."

It's not that bad, really. We have our fair share of both Austrian, Turkish and Yugoslav influence, so the infrastructure we have left is adaquate. What i mean is that people there is moe intelligent than in other countries just because they have to undergo some difficulties. Being intelligent doesn't mean knowing more things, maybe you know more than anyone else, but it doesnt mean you are intelligent at all.
