St. Petersburg is /lit/ as fuck, the rest not that much. Everyone in Russia who can afford it moves either to Moscow or St. Pete. But in any case russians know (russian) literature very well because they have to read all the classics in school. I had some some pretty decent discussions about Dosto and Tolstoy with taxi drivers here.

One thing about russian intellectuals is, that they are usually relatively poor. You might be a professor and get a fairly decent salary but it's nothing compared to their western colleagues. In the west you have guys with cardigans and expensives glasses who drink red wine and will have nice discussions over a nice dinner and then everyone goes to bed early. In Russia I know some philosophy professors who will go to their dacha, get shitfaced and then have fistfights over Hegel before they fuck their female colleagues. They're patrician as fuck but didn't forget what it means to be alive.

If you go to a Slavic grammar school (so 14-18) you'll study logic, philosophy, sociology, pschyology, know two world languages (at least) or four (at most); it's just that this knowledge is fuck-all useful in the real world, so most tend to forget, that is, not practice on what they've learned.

>logic, phil, psy, soc

My eccentric English teacher tried to teach us some of that but otherwise, no. Psychology was an elective, and being Canadians we were forced to learn French. History was also an elective available only in our last year, other than that we had something called "social studies." In social studies all history had to relate to Canada somehow or teach us about our values of equality and multiculturalism. There was also a disproportionate focus on the federal Liberal Party. For example we spent a lot more time reading about Pearson and his brave quest to bring peace and give us a new flag (yay!) then Diefenbaker. Diefenbaker was presented as this kooky guy who liked nuclear weapons and was basically an American. The class had a round of jokes about Albertans and then one bully slapped me on the neck because I was from Calgary had ought to "have a red neck."

I hate my country.

It's not that bad, really. We have our fair share of both Austrian, Turkish and Yugoslav influence, so the infrastructure we have left is adaquate. There still is some tension but the younger generation has a strange division -- either they're full blown 'i like u just the way u r :)' or they will attack you based on your religion.

The pay is lousy, but we are poor so it isn't that expensive to live. Cities are beatiful and well kept over the years. Aside from the usual corrupt politician in every ex-commie country, it's not bad. The climate is a perfect continental, warm summers, cold winters.

But you will always be irrelevant, what can you even do there that makes an impact on anyone? What kind of life can you live in a tiny shithole that every normal person wants to get out of as soon as possible? With what kind of people? You can't do anything on a cultural, intellectual, any kind of scene really, that matters. How can you even find normal people to talk to when the country is so tiny and most people are just braindead peasants?

Speaking to such a person fills your heart with awe. Just my grandmother had such an eventful life that's it is always nice to speak to her -- think of how many thousand people like her there are. They have the life experience that helps someone from here understand the world better.
And, altought I really dislake this term, they're 'redpilled' ie they know what's happening and why it's happening but they've gone numb, and are willing to teach others to respect others, but love their own.
