Isn't she the prostitute waif? A sweet, young girl who deserved better? The Secret History would be good...if it was set in the UK it would already be on it's second bbc adaptation.
I think the movie's amazing, but a Portrait of a Lady miniseries would be interesting...Henry James is strangely underadapted outside of Turn of the Screw. Also more Shirley Jackson, but that's already happening.

Polanski could comprehend Raskolnikov's fall, but not really his redemption. He is certainly ideal for movies like Chinatown and Macbeth, but for Crime and Punishment? Polanski's perspective is too bleak and nihilistic, especially to understand freely accepting punishment for spiritual renewal
