So, really new to this whole world of literature (used to basically read fantasy and sci-fi). Do you have any recommendations of books about literature? Is it necessary to better understand it?

Wow boy, that's an expensive book. But thanks for the tip.

its not purchased often/aimed at "laymen," most uni students majoring in humanities who need to take an intro theory class.

the explanatory essays/author life bio that precede each excerpt are very helpful. the primary texts themselves vary in "interestingness"

word of warning - not everyone falls in love with theory, many hate it, even more find it boring/pointless. try looking at the index/table of contents (you can find it on the norton site) and reading a few random excerpts online. if you don't hate it go ahead and buy it. otherwise maybe dropping $70 on isomething you're gonna drop after 10 pages might not be the best idea.

Just read books and ignore all the cultural marxist "theory". Trust me on this.

I don't know man. I really enjoy the books I'm reading, but I want to know if there is more to it than what I'm getting from them, if something like this will make me more capable of criticism.
