I will never finish a draft of my novel because I constantly edit the first few pages then disregard most of the edits.

I've been doing this for years. Haven't produced a single novel.

>new writers thinking they can just start with a novel
Why do people do this?

Well known writers seem to have struggled with novels, or preferred short stories. Off the top of my head, Lovecraft, Sturgeon, Harlan Ellison, Bradbury(?).

I think most novelists started with shorts before even thinking about novels.

You could also say that the short form favours the shorter attention spans of today, more than a novel.

I think this is very mistaken.
Too often to people write a "novel" because they cannot condense their thoughts, because they don't know how to properly tell a story, because it gives them more freedom - too much freedom - which they misuse.
