Before we were born we didn't exist. No amount of time can sum up the non-existence of time that we were apart of.

When we die we travel back to our original states. Everything has a birth and death, and the only thing that is infinite is the concept of non-existence.

Prepared for it, no? Scared of it? Also, no.

Death is an unavoidable event that is a mystery to humanity. The other side is entirely unknowable with any amount of certainty beyond faith. I'm curious to see what lies beyond death. If it's nothingness, will it even register? What happens to my consciousness? How could something with the depth of philosophical thoughts and the power of raw emotion simply disappear and cease to exist? It's absolutely mind-boggling.

However, on the off chance that it IS simply ceasing to exist, I'd like to continue life for awhile longer, experiencing what I have to experience and whatnot. In the meantime, what's everyone's favorite idea of an afterlife? I personally would enjoy an instant-replay of the life you just lived, except it can be altered as you have already lived it once. Invest all of your money in Microsoft and Apple right when they start up, Avoid X person because of Y shit, know exactly how to roll with the punches, etc. A chance to perfect the life you lived the first time.

I like how Muslims in the past weren't scared of death because they saw it as returning to God and ending their Earthly phase/stage. It's really something which makes me wonder if it can boiled down to Certainty. We're scared because we're not certain of what's after death, while those Muslims were certain. I don't even know which response you're criticizing, so I will take responsibility for both of them.

The "I'm scared of dying before my life is finished" implies that one life is about reaching a certain goal that, after being achieved, said life is finished. However plenty of things could happen through life that could stop you for achieving those goals, or even you could change your worldview as a whole, leaving said goals irrelevant and finding others.
Yeah, there's the chance that you could complete said goals, but human endeavor usually doesn't stop once your goals are complete. People usually thrives for other things after they have achieved something. Things are never complete, and easy things aren't as satisfactory as those that are hard to achieve, so one must seek to do as much as one can in order to obtain true realization.
Or perhaps I'm just overthinking it

About existing before we were born that's really simple to explain. Even if there was something before our current state of existence that's irrelevant to the discussion the moment you realize that said possible "existence" has nothing to do with our current state of affairs.
All of what makes you... Well, you, has existed as long as the time you have stayed on this earth. You don't have any memories about your "non-self" because from your current point of view you didn't exist in that moment. You, the one that is currently in front of a computer discussing about other forms of existence, are choosing to believe that there is a before, but even the sole concept of "before" is possible only because you exist in this finite existence in which you travel to an inevitable death that's called "life". All of what resides outside of that state of affairs is quite "unreachable" if you can't contrast it with other human experiences, or in other words, you cannot demonstrate the non-self because there's not such a thing as remembering being a non-self.
That's way the self comes first to existence, because existence is a condition created by the self to describe his state of affairs in this world.

Watts speaks about memory and sleep when talking about death, or better about the futility of this whole anxiety we all have about the concept of not existing anymore. Do you remeber the last time you woke up? Sure, now do you remember the FIRST time you woke up, as a child? and what was there before that? Well obviosly no. So when we die, its not that different, you see, from going to sleep without waking up the next morning, say you die in your sleep at night, would you have any experience of anything? I'm fascinated by his explaination and truly believe we experience death every night and we did before we were born.

my only fear that it isn't actually the end, that you can't just off yourself and that's that.

Nope. If my life was currently threatened I'd fight to survive, but that's because I enjoy this life, not because I'm afraid of the inevitable end or worried about anything after it.

>> No.8496640

Well I am scared, which is natural, but I accept it. It simply has to happen, pointless fighting, screaming and resisting is pointless.

No, and for those who say: 'oh, you just don't get it, you haven't really come to terms with how terrifying death is, you just have a bunch of defense mechanisms blocking you off from the reality of it'
That could well be true but that's who I am now and will be (for the most part) for the rest of my life, doesn't stop the fact that even when I've sincerely felt there was a chance I was going to die, I wasn't terrified, I wasn't even particularly concerned.

Getting tortured/the prospect of it, that's terrifying. Not the dying part that could well come after it

The prospect of the alternative of eternal existence is just as much if not more terrifying to me.

No. The only alternative to not dying is to live forever, and eternal life is more terrifying then eternal death.
