I heard an alternate theory years ago. It went a long the lines of that since Winston and Julia loved each other that this was seen as weakness in the eyes of The Brotherhood and since they could not dedicate themselves entirely to the cause, they needed to be cut off from the group lest they compromise their objectives. And that O'Brien was actually a member of The Brotherhood but had infiltrated The Party.
