This bookshelf pisses me off. It's like whoever owns it downloaded their taste in books off the guardian.com. It's not that they're bad books, most of them aren't anyway, but they're all such uniformly safe choices that I don't know where the guy's soul is.

It's like he made an excel spreadsheet with a nested IF formula with conditions based on his boring taste and every time he thought about buying a book he plugged it into excel and saw what came up.

Like I said, it's not that the Western Canon is bad, it's that only reading established classics says nothing about who you are. Why post your bookshelf if it's the same as thousands of other Muh Cannnon bookshelves? Not to mention that you can get all those books for free at the library or for a few dollars on the internet and that there is no justification for buying Thus Spoke Zarathustra for full retail at Barnes and Noble.

You could also think of a /lit/ pseud canon with all the favourites eg. Pynchon, DFW, Stirner, etc, etc. That's just as bad.

You can still easily tell by the edges of the covers, if the pages are all neatly compressed so the book is still a perfect rectangle, or if the sides of the spine have some wear.

A lot of people have all of the meme classics but are too pussy to read them since they are longer than 400 pages.

In general English translations are better then Dutch, there are of course exceptions. (Such as the Dutch translation of Soumission which is superb)

In terms of syntax and vocabulary Dutch is more limited then English, some nuances can't be translated well by no fault of the translator but of the limitations put forth by the language itself. In addition a lot of Dutch translations have a thing for overly using Dutch expressions which put me off.

I've never really liked Brouwers but I'll give him a try again.
