This is my first time on this board. I was looking for some good fantasy books to read. I'm reading Hour of the dragon right now. Please no Twilight or The Hobbit.

A Song of Ice and Fire is a really good series by George R. R. Martin. The first book is A Game of Thrones. I suggest checking it out.

The Name of the Wind is usually recommended to people.
I haven't read it, but it's supposed to be good.

The Monk, by Matthew Gregory Lewis. The "original" fantasy novel. Seriously, you can't call yourself a fantasy fan unless you have read it.

If there's such a thing as the original fantasy novel, I'd say it was "Phantastes" by George MacDonald. I don't recommend it, though. Try "Lud-in-the-Mist" or Hugh Cook or Diana Wynne Jones or Amos Tutuola.

Before it was called classical literature, it was called fantasy. It's about a doctor who builds an undead monster. Sounds like scifi/fantasy to me.

Dhampir is a little known treasure. I say that because I'm a big fan of dark fantasy - Y'know, settings where shit just goes wrong for everyone. Ever played Dragon Age? If you have, you'll like Dhampir.

Now, Dhampir might sound sueish to alot of folks - It's synopsis definitely turned me off to it. It follows the pursuit of a vampire hunter (I know, I know) who, she discovers, is actually the product of a vampire and human mating (yeah, I know). Due to this, however, she's the perfect individual for hunting them. This takes a long time for her to accept, given that she's been preying off desperate villagers to hunt nonexistant vampires for the better part of her adult life. Add in the fact that the other fantasy races are, supposedly, in a state of disrepair, and the human nation is as divided as all hell, and it's got alot of opportunity. Yeah.

It's nice to see somebody not sucking GRRM's fat-enshrouded cock, but you're right, this book does sound awful.
Is it in any way related to Vampire Hunter D? Wondering because of the Dhampir thing, or does the term actually have some sort of mythological root, not pop culture?
