Why has so much of 18th/19th/20th century been philosophy been devoted to refuting nihilism in some way?

I'm uninformed when it comes to philosophy but from an outside perspective it seems like nihilism is a dead end for philosophy. It may or may not be correct but once you get to it there's not much room for new ideas.
