Dude. Against Method changed my life. He's definitely one of my favourite philosophers

Those that are capable of forcing complete conformity to their beliefs, have earned the right to proclaim those beliefs as fact.

You know, I was going to say that someone who "forces conformity" by dint of having beliefs that are able to be proved correct in a reproducible way is different than someone who "forces conformity" by dint of violence, but I guess that the claim that Feyerabend is making is that there is no difference, or not much of one. I obviously need to read some of his work, because that sounds patently stupid.

>> No.842857

>>842845

You would never know the difference, if you were conforming to their belief though.

It's not enough to parrot the party line, you must BELIEVE it.

Right, but I could perform experiments that would reproduce the results of, say, Isaac Newton, but I certainly couldn't falsify, say, the racialist theories of Khmer Rouge propaganda.

Do you think I'm allowed to post that as my Facebook status without having actually read "Against Method?"

It's well known that Newton was something of a Nazi. Once you accept classical mechanics, you're little better than a Nazi yourself. Are you a Nazi?

you could just call it racist and briefly explain why it is racially rather than epistemicly motivated and leave it at that.

>> No.843330

Not the guy you're responding to here, but Khmer Rouge race ideology is not something you can test for repeatable evidence, at least without having to adapt to a set of clauses determined by the people you're trying to understand ("adapting" usually meant not wanting to die at the end of a shovel). This isn't science.

Newton is easy: you can do his experiments in your backyard which match his own results, and his theories have proven useful in space navigation. Haven't read any feyerabend, but he seems to imply that such a thing shouldn't exist.
