When it comes down to it, isn't reading fiction as much of a waste of time as watching tv or playing video games? Shouldn't you read stuff to better yourself instead?

Fiction helps you understand human nature, improves your empathy, develops your vocabulary, imagination, creativity. Lots of stuff. Fiction can help you grasp even important political, philosophical, and scientific ideas more intuitively.
