>> No.830569

Books on average require some effort on the part of the reader on an intellectual level.

Videogames require effort in the sense that they require you to think in order to beat them, but they rarely make you think in a way where if you are failing to take in what's going on, you don't continue. There are some exceptions, but this is very rare. This is comparing books and videogames story-wise. Books don't require any time limits or hand-eye co-ordination so there is no pressure. So comparing them in that sense would be like comparing reading to football.

Movies or television, at least in my opinion can be even less engaging. At least for the worse ones. As they require no effort at all on behalf of the viewer, who is now free to unplug his or her mind and become a vegetable. There are a decent number of movies or TV programs that require brain activity, (much more than videogames) but still I'd say the majority leans the other way.

I don't know what "better" means in this context. Do you mean "better at entertaining", "better at deepening cultural wealth", "better at improving your literary background", "better at selling"...? Because those will all get a different answer.

"Better" on its own means nothing. Things can just be better _at_ something.

Well said. It seems that people have turned this into a thread for describing the areas in which books are preferable to other media, anyways. Might as well contribute myself.

Things books have going for them, in my opinion:
-Longer history than movies and video games makes for more advanced and detailed theory and more of a canon from which to draw inspiration. Although film theory is pretty advanced, video games do not really have much theory around them as yet, as the craft has not developed and been studied enough.
-Don't require batteries or charging, and can be consumed without requiring the aid of special devices (unless it's dark, in which case you need only a light source)
-Inexpensive
-Exercise the minds of their consumers by requiring the reader to visualize and fill in the blanks where things are left unsaid
-Are not rendered obsolete by the advancement of technology, as are movies with special effects or video games
-You can select chapters to re-read at will, and take as long as you want to in doing it
-Don't tax the eyes like staring at a screen does
-Are made of trees, which are a renewable resource; movies and video games are packaged in plastics, which are made from oil and are non-biodegradable and non-renewable

That said... I'm kinda tempted to post the merits of video games and movies too ^_^;

I don't have a reason. They're all good at depicting a certain story in different mediums. I choose to work with words because it's more fun and the ideas can be interpreted in more varied ways because you don't have an actual visual and only your imagination. But none are honestly better than the other. Certain stories should be told in certain ways. Point: a Bioshock book would suck ass (Atlas Shrugged)

>> No.830962

because books can put you inside the head of the protagonist and you can hear what they are thinking and better understand why they are acting the way they are. with a movie or game protagonist you only have your own thought process with which to understand them.

Video games, as an art, are very competitive when it comes to the final product. They exist within a capitalistic market, which isn't overtly artistic. I know that this is rough to accept, but it's the truth. So, because of this market that governs the final product of almost any video game, there isn't too much observation of the history, culture and predecessors that ultimately lead to any new, specific creation.

Hardly any video games recursivley react to older generations of games, never mind predecessors.

This is exactly what makes literature alive and breathing --imitatio.

Imitatio is not inherent in the media genre of video games, therefore, the can never achieve the scholarly prominence of literature and it's ability to create creation through creation.

Games use a shitload of imitation and reference older games quite often...it's just a much younger medium But seriously how many shooters have you seen since halo that don't have replenishing shields?

Also lots of books are written with a primary aim of selling books. Difference is that if you like literature, you have a much longer tail of past work to dip into and the bland turds just don't survive to come down to us.

Games have a LONG way to go but they are getting better year after year.
