it's kind of like harry potter meets the entire history of western thought. as far as the narrative goes it's top notch. but every chapter or so there's an in depth discussion of some scientific or philosophical idea and sometimes it's pretty mind blowing.

I'd love if there were more writers like Neal Stephenson, but no, so far he's unique... I really like his stuff, but for similar stuff to anathem you should really check out his Baroque Cycle, it's not about philosophy, but about economics and money

I would recommend Cryptonomicon. I think it's the best book he's written so far. (Not counting Baroque Cycle because it is a series of books.)
