sometimes i get frustrated with people who don't take the bible seriously. however, it seems like /lit/ gives it a decent amount of respect and even those on here who don't follow christianity as a religion still seem able to see value in the book. am i correct? how do you view the bible?

The same way I view other important texts, such as the Vestas or the Qur'an. They shaped many cultures and they deserve a certain respect. But we should not forget that in wrong hands these are the tools of manipulation.

I strongly dislike so-called cultural christians, aesthetes who fetishize religion and those who associate christianity with "civilization". These have a tendency to hold subversive opinions and assert incorrect, interpretitive positions.

I'd rather prefer discussion of it to center around true believers and those who earnestly seek Christ in their hearts.

Boring and stupid as fuck, which is why no one really reads it. Give it a try, OP, I bet you won't make it through the whole book.

I'm stuck in Genesis. I'm sick of all these fucking names.
I do want to read it though because I know some of the books are good

Our civilization considers the Bible its most important work and the ground its society was built upon, same as Greeks and Romans considered the Illiad. Essentially, western civilization is literary civilization where ideas are expressed and passed to next generations in the form of literary canon instead of oral tradition or some vague philosophical ideas deeply rooted in the collective consciousness, like it was the case long time ago in other civilizations.

This makes the knowing of Bible's mythology important and useful honestly, especially if you're gonna do any sort of intellectual creative work and so on.
With Christianity, the Europe grew up from some childish slumber of Rome. Some philosophers call the state of mind of some native tribes childhood, whilist Roman/Greek was adolescence. Christianity is a step further into adulthood because of its harshness, well defined messages and principles, seriousness and it also brought end to vagueness, speculative and ritual nature of old religions that became ridiculous as the time went by and Rome got a lot of new foreign ideas. With it, the society grew up too. All religions are accepted at the time society matured enough for them. Imagine how different the next religion or philosophical ideas are going to be for the masses to accept them today.

That is why you have those mocking Christianity that will soon become majority. It all happened before too. Eventually, new ideas will pop up and become accepted. Now, the old religions seem cool, but the so called intellectuals of old, philosophers and gradually the rich people hated it for its infantile and misleading nature that simply became obsolete for the society that started to think.

We've already had antichrist President Obama, soon Hillary will try her best to get into the Oval Office. Remember the Bible mentions multiple Antichrists arriving in Revelation.

I unironically think the Bible is the infallible, inerrant word of God. It contains everything God wants to tell his people today, and should be read often. The Bible also contains the only worldview that can consistently explain life, meaning, and everything.

The Bible is epic literature. Absolutely essential read if one wants to gain more insight into the allusions of most literary fiction. Also, way more fun to read than people might think.
